  1. Im talking about the fact that the nuclear radius is impossibly huge for the atomic orbitals shown to exist. if your going to draw a picture draw it right!
  2. Im fed up of having to buy cigarettes and getting that annoying guilt trip when i read the health labels plastered all over the packet - second hand smoke damages those around you, decreases fertility, leads to a slow and painful death, will kill you blah blah blah. Smoking is cool. JAMES BOND DOES IT!!!
  3. How are those better proportions?

    Awwwww

Its strange that a very small cute fluffy animal can demand so much national attention while politics and world affairs take a back seat to a midget hamster. Although in saying that it is soooo small!
  5. Using antidisestablishmentarianistic was entirely predictable. im waiting for a german speaker to break out some compound verbs. those muthas are LONG.
  6. While you lot argue amongst yourselves id like to point out that the banners in question show the Bohr model of the atom with highly irregular size ratios between the size of the nucleus and electron orbiatals, and as a chemist I feel it is my duty to complain. Im not writing this to get a torrent of abuse from faf, honestly. No really, Im not.
  7. i wasnt offended, and wasnt trying to be offensive or rude. All i was saying is that theres no way we can give you an answer to the question you asked when all we have to go on are some vague descriptions. The cosmetics industry uses thousands of different chemicals (this particular vial will have a massive array of ingredients, not just a solitary compound) so unless you take it to you chemistry teacher (preferrably lecturer as universities have pretty neat analytical machines, particularly spectroscopy).
  8. well its pretty hard to give you an answer to the question! You find a random cosmetic in your house and have played around with it for a while, with no actual qualitative results to speak of. try some non chemical approaches, like finding out the brand, who left it, what it actually is...
  9. I take it no one read any of Robert Collins' papers I posted this afternoon? A respected theist who regularly lectures on this topic about exactly this subject?
  10. There is strong evidence for design in looking at the universe as a whole - Robert Collins wrote some interesting stuff we use in our theology class. Robert Collins' Homepage Other theistic arguments that stil hold some weight are several simple analogies - Paley's watch is a good indication of the likelihood of design, although David Hume actually strongly criticised such thinking 25 years before Paley recorded his thoughts and musings. Its unsurprising on a science website to see almost exclusive perennial naturalism. the majority of atheists dismiss humanist views as simple mumbo jumbo. people even try and quantify the exact mathematical probability of God's existence. To say this a useless exercise is a vast underexaggeration.Personally i love reading theists like stuff like Barth, Bonhoeffer, Aquinas and even as far back as Plato. it certainly makes a break from chemistry textbooks.
  11. Attempts are made because people are desperate to disprove the laws of thermodynamics and get something for nothing. A mechanical machine like the one in that post is an example of the types of machine thought of over the centuries. Most are due to scientists not yet being aware of the nature of energy and, as mentioned, the laws of thermodynamics.
  12. The closest thing to perpetual motion in nature is the current that goes around a superconducting loop. Due to their being no resistance the current can exist for as long as it wants, this implies the loop is kept below its superconducting transition temperature however.
  13. 1. there is no formula for petrol, its a mix of hydrocarbons. Octane is a pretty common constituent, which is C8H18. 2. Generally you get carbon dioxide and water, as with most hydrocarbon combustion reactions, but because of impurities in the petrol you get some sulphur dioxide and occasionally the nitrogen in the air gets converted to NO at the spark plug.
  14. Specifically village bicycle. Everyone's had a ride.
  15. Three engineers are driving in a car. One a chemist, the other a structural engineer, and the third a software engineer. the car breaks down. It'll be an impurity in the fuel, clogging the engine, the chemist says. No, itll be a problem with the crank shaft and the associated torque, says the structural engineer. the software engineer. pauses for a moment, before saying: just hold the break down then press the gearstick and the horn. Failing that, why dont we all get out the car, then get back in and try turning it on again?

Its a minor and ultimately irrelevant point. maybe your maths teacher should concentrate on teaching maths because it looks like hes just trying appear like the wise old owl due to a technicality of language. Not particularly impresssive for a teacher.
  17. Thats cos football is the greatest game on Earth. Our creator even modelled the universe in its image, now THATS marketting for you.
  18. Eh? If there are areas where other members disagree, then theyll say so, hence debate. Whats your point caller?
  19. Probbaly not, because as MrL_Jakiri stated, one if your premises is not a fact. feel free to post your ideas on this site, but dont expect them to be agreed with when there are fundemental discrepencies in the manner in which you derive theories.
  20. No, we wouldnt. Air is not a drug. it is necessary for the continuation of life. Crack isnt. if we breathed slower, we become more tired and our bodies would manually make us breathe at a normal rate. it takes a long time to acclimatise to a low oxygen environment, you cant just sit in your room and time your breathing. In a sense air is killing us. the oxygen radicals in our bloodstream contribute to the ageing process and slowly kill cells etc, hastening our death. but that doesnt mean air is a drug. And STOP USING ELIPSES. learn to write properly, youll find the full stop key next to your comma key.

    grr school

Ahhhhh university. Wake up, attend lecture unless hungover. go back to bed. possibly a quick tutorial later. go back to bed cigarette break out to pub, on to union, stagger home cigarette break sleep, definitely no lectures tomorrow.
  22. we cant give you an argument because you're not making any sort of claim, and if you were then that post was so incoherent it got lost. 1. the elipsis is only to be used at the end of a sentence to allude further content or for mysterious effect, not liberally waved everywhere like a violent snake. 2. try and talk in sentences. its the way the queen's english works; little phrases and statements surrounded by improper grammar resemble literal garbage. 3. try and actually have a point to begin with. it makes the post so much more worthwhile.
  23. Actually smallpox could be an incredibly devastating virus if released properly. If it was released on its own, it could possibly be isolated in time if the emergency services did everything by the book (even then its unlikely) but if coupled with a large power outage, a terrorist attack of some kind, or something that would generally make traffic grind to a halt then it could be a slaughter. But yes, 4 hours is a bit off. I could name at least 20 factors that would massively affect the spread of the virus - stats like 4 hours dont have any weight behind them.
  24. Normally the council own bus signs. Why would you tell anyone???? My friend crashed his van into a tram in Amsterdam and just sped away, the tram took more damage than the van strangely enough!
  25. As the report states a lot of the tension is drug related, plus I have a feeling there's lingering animosity between muslims and hindus.
