  1. Say it's the apocalypse, and we need fresh drinking water. Silver is known for its anti-bacterial properties. Would adding a whole silver dollar, to say 1 liter of water able to kill bacteria in it? Just a curious question. ~EE
  2. So I have a custom built computer, about 3 years old...stowed under my desk. I'm trying to extend its life as long as possible (no issues right now..just good prevention), so I have it at an angle away from the wall and slightly sticking out from under the desk so the air exiting the computer doesn't get too hot. I also have a fan blowing on high at the exit vent, so it pushes the air coming out of the computer faster. Is htis the best i can do too make sure it doesn't overheat? I also has coolant too. Here's a diagram of the set up.
  3. So is this issue that there is not enough magma under the eastern seaboard than the west and midwest? I assumed that, like the water table, if you dig deep enough eventually you're going to hit the inner crust/magma parts. This sounds like it would work anywhere...just find a plot of land and dig..right or no? Hopefully this picture helps illustrate my message...
  4. I'm sorry, but I dont follow...is this good or bad?
  5. Perhaps I'm not understanding the correct concept of geothermal energy, so this suggestion may be a bit ignorant..but: Geothermal energy is essentially using heat from the earth (i.e. hot magma) to heat water, which spins a turbine.. blah blah..you know. Is this strictly done only at existing geysers? Because I was thinking, though it is expensive, wouldn't it still be cost effective in the long run just to dig say 500-1000ft into the earth where it's hot e enough to massive pipes to heat water? Once you dig the hole, and it's paid off, that's basically a never ending heat source, compared to nuclear energy or fossil fuels. We'vemanaged to build a ton of oil rigs and oil pipelines around the world...what's a couple of 1000ft holes going to make different? Am I getting this right or no? ~EE
  6. Just a curious thought if a random polymorphism could ever become a dominant trait in a population without any kind of selective pressure on the gene. ~EE
  7. Not all bacteria are susceptible to low pH (acidic conditions). Generally, most bacteria are susceptible to acidic conditions, but there are always exceptions..these bacteria are known as "acdiophiles"(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acidophile). Take the bacterium. H. pylori for example, this bacteria thrives at a pH of 2 (very acidic), and is known to colonize in the human gut, which causesstomach ulcers. I'm not sure about viruses though..never heard of a virus that can withstand acidic conditions. FYI, there are bacteria that can live perfectly well in radioactive conditions as they have very, very efficient enzymes that correct DNA damage via radioactive mutation, preventing them from dying. ~EE
  8. I'm either going to get a complete lash back or some kind of 60/40 response: Have the mods/ admins ever considered removing the "Politics" and "Religion" forum topics? If not, I ask you consider it. My reasons for "Removing the Politics and Religion" forum topics: 1) Firstly, the rule goes, never talk about religion and politics 2) This is a SCIENCE forum, not a SCIENCE AND OPINION forum 3) P & R topics tend to be long winded, with no real end in sight, especially the POLITICS forum 4) P & R topics also show passionate/ emotional sides of members that wouldn't normally show in regular scientific discussion 5) P & R potentially keeps people away from other forum topics, due to bias involvement due to probability of passionate discussion via opinion 6) There's already a science-news forum. Why add non-science news 7) Isn't the LOUNGE already fulfill this role? if you have a general topic forum (the lounge), there's more diversity and flow of ideas rather than POLITICS, POLITICS, RELIGION, POLITICS. 8) I want to keep the PHILOSOPHY and ETHICS topics, as they at least promote logical discussion. 9) Removing P & R would weed out first time members who only want to talk or troll about religion or politics via Google searches ...again...am I crazy for asking this? ~EE
  9. Looks confusing...does it show the individual side chain interactions (i.e. hydrogen bonding, etc)? TY, BTW!
  10. Does anyone know of a computer program that allows you to see the 3D structure of a protein, and all the side chain interactions? No urgent reason. I'd just like to have one ~EE
  11. I believe titanium is used in some armor or armor piercing rounds. On the molecular level, what makes titanium more resistant to damage (via blunt force) than steel? if its not, then is there anything stronger than steel? (Not talking melting point) ~EE
  12. I think there will be alot of other ENTP's here, considering the attraction of scientists who love theory's and ideas. ~EE
  13. "In Russia, Pyrex only use You". I dont care, change it to what think is ok
  14. Forget it. A couple websites I looked through say installation is an easy payment of $30,000-$50,000. I was thinking $2000-$3000. Even with a gov't subsidy that would still be alot.
  15. *Hint hint*, "D" is not an answer.
  16. Say you live out in the country, with plenty of acreage. Is it worth building your own wind turbine, say 75 ft in height, that is capable of powering your house for a few hours a day? Not necessarily the only power source, but something to reduce energy bills over a year. ~EE
  17. Did you buy this glassware from a supplier, or are these just general market prices? If you did buy them from a supplier, can you send me the link! How large? probably small for an undergrad class.
  18. What does this have to do with anything. O wait, let me post some statistics on the Vietnam War.
  19. I live in NY. One has to go through an extensive background check, classes and a permit to own a pistol. With rifles and shotguns it's not as difficult, but still consistent. However, 2 years ago, in West Chester, NY, some ex-criminal paid off his neighbor to buy him a shotgun, and then kill two firefighters after they ran into a house he had lit on fire. Per year, how many firearms deaths are: Murder w/ illegal means of obtaining the gun Murder w/ legal means of obtaining the gun Accidental death Is this counting suicide too?
  20. All 3 of my distilling flasks were 1-liter in volume. An open flame was used on the first, but then cracked. The second, I tried a water bath, but couldn't really find any container big enough to fit enough water and the flask. I then used a hot plate, and it too cracked. So far with my 1-liter pyrex flask, I've been using a hot plate with no issues or cracking. Honestly, I'm not sure. This is the one I bought. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Glass-Essential-Oil-Steam-Distillation-Apparatus-Liebig-Condenser-W-Clamps/261984670797?_trksid=p2141725.c100338.m3726&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150313114020%26meid%3D8bec34b93ee744689dfd275844594ac0%26pid%3D100338%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D121795488699 Only the distilling flask cracked so i have everything else, if anyone wants the other components, lol
  21. Obviously, Doc Browne knew more than you fools
  22. Bought 2 different distillation kits...non-pyrex. After about a dozen distillations, the distilling flask cracked. Bought a different one...flask cracked again. Broke down, and saved up. Bought a pyrex distillation kit, much more expensive. Has lasted me well over 2 dozen distillations! Pyrex, only pyrex.
