  1. I think it has to do with their conformational structures. Glucose having the ability to change into a boat conformation renders it theoretically more stable than ribose, which utilizes the envelope or twist conformation as it's most stable conformation. -since ribose has a generally less stable conformation than glucose, it should be more reactive. ~ee
  2. I'm trying to perform some addition/ substitution reactions involving carboxylic acids. Is it necessary to use a reflux condenser to supply enough energy for the reaction to occur, or will a catalyst and heat be sufficient? -thanks ~EE
  3. you mean if the alternator can't be used?
  4. I have an old leaf blower with a 25cc 2 stroke engine. The plastic casing cracked making the leaf blower useless, but I took the out the engine and it is perfect condition. -Any ideas on what I could do it (besides sell it)? I don't have ALOT of tools so I can't mount it on a bike but that would be hella sweet though. -Thanks ~EE
  5. -b/c steroids are illegal, hence no discussion on the sale/ obtaining of illegal substance, in this case steroids potentially. -Back to the OP. If you're looking for "chemicals" that "enhance" your muscles, just eat "natural" protein found in nuts and fish. You can also buy protein supplements to mix in drinks. Protein is what builds up muscle. However it really only works if you work out enough for the protein to repair taxed muscle (so dont just eat 750 g of protein and do nothing). ~EE ~ee
  6. I was going to say a steam distillation apparatus, but you could have fooled me.
  7. -fischer esterification
  8. I know antiseptic ethanol from Walgreens and other pharmacies is only 70% and has various additives to make it undrinkable. However is it ok use this ethanol in lab experiments. I've been distilling my own ethanol now for the past few months, and frankly I'm tired of it. ~Thanks, EE
  9. I suppose if you're looking for an anabolic eating schedule, i woud suggest high proteins, and some vegetables, however, i only say that b/c proteins are used for anabolic processes. Good Luck! ~ee
  10. Just to reiterate what Delta1212 said, energy doesn't just appear, it is transferred from one system to another (i.e. chemical to thermal). Energy is neither created nor destroyed.
  11. there is a "lite salt" that is 100% KCl with no NaCl, you just have to find it. I know b/c I use it all the time to make KNO3.
  12. Why not just buy KCl at the store, they sell it as an alternative to NaCl, called "Lite Salt"; not to mention it would be far more pure than reacting KOH and HCl. -and less dangerous as John C. said.
  13. Most likely a satellite. Satellies look like small moving stars, and tend to reflect sunlight depending on where the most reflective portion of the satellite is facing. While you were watching it, it may have rotated away from the sunlight making it invisible to the naked eye. Also if you saw in the middle of the day, all it would take is a slight reduction in reflection of sunlight to make it very hard to see, due to the ambient light in the day time. -other explanations: - balloon -military drone -no UFO ~ee
  14. -What are the qualifications? -Any openings? -Is it a cult, in which you're asked, not you ask? ~ee
  15. When making biodiesel, which alcohol yields a more energy efficient product: methanol or ethanol? -making some at home, and I have a lot of ethanol I can use, however I want the best product I can make. ~Thanks, ~ee
  16. Originally, I wanted to major in chemistry, but was deterred by lots and LOTS of people telling me a bachelors is chemistry gets you no where, at most a lab rat job. So I changed to biochemistry, and after finding out the same thing switched to double major of biotechnology and medical technology. I only changed to bio/med tech for a career, not because I couldn't "hack it". That being said, I always thought the same about the bio/med tech peoples relative to the chem, engineering etc. They're really their own group they seem to be happy that they're there, and don't go beyond the scope of their field. At my university the GPA requirement was 3.4, and bio/med techs are really glorified here (lets see in the real world ), so I suppose it depends where you go. I'm from Buffalo, NY and we have a huge med-tech boom going on here now so techs are in high demand. I guess I lucked out.
  17. Ya I just figured that out. I'll leave the comment though...gotta protest the way those Brits say aluminium.
  18. Comedy value? How do you Brits pronounce piston? (peestone?). Sure hope its not as ridiculous as "aloo-min-yum"
  19. For eq.1 my thought is CoO +H2O. What are the conditions STP?
  20. If we can generate mass quantites of carbon dioxide, why can't we generate large amounts of ozone? The only good synthesis of ozone I know is using the "dielectric barrier discharge" method. Private investors? Government subsidies? Would makes ALOT of jobs. Design aircraft to release the ozone high in the atmosphere. -I'm not saying we would have to produce more ozone than carbon dioxide, just enough to balance out, or slowly retard the depletion of the ozone layer. This is definitely something that needs to be researched.
  21. If the ozone is depleting why not artificially added extra ozone (O3) to the layer to stabilize it? Sounds really fundamwntal, so I know Im wrong, but why? ~ee
  22. However in the video those are solid particles of sand on a flat surface. Gaseous molecules may respond faster, relative to the correct frequency. Definitely worth trying to see.
  23. I was thinking about synthesizing antimony, just concerned about safety precautions. Yea the thermite was a shocker, probably going to destroy it. I'm unsure of its quality/ purity and I dont plan to find out. is antiomony worth anything?
  24. My neighbor gave me a bunch of old chemicals that his father used as he was a chemist, during the 1960's. I was given about 20 jars of common chemicals you'd find in a chemists basement (sodium nitrate, camphor, potassium nitrate, etc.) However, there were other chemicals on hand that do have me a bit worried such as antimony trioxide, antimony trisulfide, iodine, thermite, and about 4 or 5 jars of powers and liquids with which I do not know the contents. -Are there any resourceful uses of the antimony substances? if not what is the best route of disposing of them? ~ee
