  4. I understand that some commercially sold alcohol used for medicinal use or such contains toxins purposely mixed to avoid being drank. I thought this may have been those additives
  5. I distilled 70% isopropyl alcohol in order to make propene, later propeylene glycol. After the distillation, there was a leftover cloudy, green liquid in my florenece flask. Just curious, what is this green liquid, additives of the propanol? what are they, can they beused for anything? ~ee

  8. NaBH4 is out of the question. Things that ignite with water scare me and I don't want to store anything like that. What is an average portion of catalytic Pt? How how much would it cost. Long shot here...can could it be obtained from catalytic converters? I'm more concerned with disposing of the waste in a green fashion.

  10. yea, just to see if I can. I dont have any platinum, and i dont really want to try raney nickel reduction. I was jsut hoping someone on here knew of some unknown cheap reduction agent that no one knows about and that was cheap...bit of a long shot. I was just going to dehydrate propanol

  12. I've always relied on the definition of wind as the change in air pressure and density. For example: If you have hot solar heat in one area, that hot air will rise, causing cooler air to rush into its place, i.e change in pressure

  15. Though it has immense theoretical instability, is it possible to synthesize propyne in incredibly cold conditions....like "liquid hydrogen" cold temperatures. Even if it was possible to synthesize would it foster any benefit? Nobel Prize worthy? ~EE

I think what you're trying to ask is "if all energy systems in the universe prefer a state of entropy, why are there well formed planets, macromolecules, etc." Well assuming you already know the principles of Gibbs Free Energy, I'd like to believe the reason organization exists in the universe is due to three reasons. One, some products (i.e. molecules, etc) are merely thermodynamically favored leading to their creation, such as formation of water from combustion of hydrogen and oxygen. Two, an extremely high level of entropy is bound to create an equilibrium between itself and organization, similar to an equilibrium in a reaction between reactants and products. Three...HYDROGEN. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and with it's high reactivity, many different reactions and products can be formed. ~EE

I mentioned that I wasn't comparing them as equivalent in practice, but try to illustrate how alchemy is viewed as a useless, waste of time practice, and that in the future chemistry may be useless and a waste of time relative to the inventions of that time. Similar to reading at the library as opposed to using the internet. In essence, I'm asking will chemistry (i.e. lab synthesis of organic compounds) have any place during the Jetsons.
  20. Now I'm not actually equating chemistry to alchemy, but I am equating their existence/ legacy through history. Alchemy, understood in today's time is an old pseudo-science philosophy of transmuting one element into another, etc...not going into detail, you get the idea. With the emergence of inventions and discoveries such as the God particle, quantum mechanics, 3D printing, holograms, powerful supercomputers, etc; will chemistry in 50-100 years be equivalent to the myth and legends of alchemy today? Will people who synthesize acetone in their garage be seen as practicing an out-dated, useless, mythical ritual that has no equivalence or purpose to the science of the future? ~EE
  21. I did some more research, I'm going to use copper tubing..I don't know why I thought of pvc piping, as the tubing will actually go through sulfric acid
  22. naw, definietly acetylene. I do know it can be either mixed or converted to acetone for when putting under harsh pressure.
  23. I'm considering psaaing sulfur dioxide through pvc piping under pressure in order to make sulfuric acid. Does sulfur dioxide react with the make-up of pvc piping?
  24. Instead of using gasoline to fuel engines, what if acetylene were used as an alternative to gasoline. It has more energy per mole, and would only require compression to combust eliminating spark plugs. If not put to commercial use, could it still be made? ~EE
  25. I did find some sources that say hydrogen peroxide is a slightly stronger oxidizer than PAA. Looking back, I did use excess hydrogen peroxide in my synthesis. I'm going to use concentrated acetic acid this time and mix in the correct proportions..I'll find a different pH measuring method and report back to you.
