  1. WOW, that thing was really haulin ass.
  2. We salmon fished when I was a kid on the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington state. I have always understood that the salmon find their exact spawning grounds they hatched from by their powerful sense of smell. I would bet, but do not know for sure, that these predators are forewarned by the changes in the air that they can smell. Bears and crocodiles are already known for their great olfactory ability, I think this is the likely signal and receptor for them to gather and feast. If these annual events continue for thousands of years, I would think group behavior would help reinforce both the predators and prey's responses to the events. But this just my personal opinion, I am not an authority in these matters.

    Crankshaft !

I thought crank shaft was SFN slang for getting your pet "theory" shot down.

  6. You should not criticize someone's comments from a position of self declared expertise of the subject and then refuse to share that expertise. This site would not function if people continually deferred to "go look it up". It is your responsibility to back up your assertions. arc
  7. Krash, they are to some of us important. For me they have slowed my tempo, they make me think more carefully. I am one that likes to take the losing side of an argument occasionally for fun, if I can at least fight a good fight and not get a neg rep It feels like a win. If this annoys you, can you imagine the unappreciated control the experts here exhibit in silence (and sometimes not) when us novice's comment in fields we know little about. The reps do help in that regard, they keep many of us from making this site unpleasant for the rest. Your are correct, I know little about these things except what I here on NPR and occasionally read. It is probably biased in that it is usually about someone who had a bad experience. I also did not clarify that my reference included futures markets and not just the purchase and holding for gains (or losses). But I stand by my not for the novice comment. Series 7, that sound interesting, what is it? arc
  8. This is going to occupy my thoughts for quite some time to come. Off hand though, I believe the scale will only show a small varying increase and decrease of the demonstrators weight, occasionally even countering the demonstrators own weight as he pulls down against the gyroscopic effect as he steers it into the circle. Why? I think the trick is, by which I mean the apparent negating of the effects of gravity on the flywheels mass or it being transferred to the demonstrator is dependent on two criteria. One is it is rotated on an axis, that being moved around the demonstrator. The second would be it is moving at right angle to the force of gravity. When the flywheel is spun up to speed it has as stated enough energy to travel 70 m (200 ft.) into the air. The demonstrator is able to redirect a portion of this very large amount of energy by changing the angle of the spinning mass into a continuous curve around an axis. He is making it climb by redirecting its momentum into a spiral curve. It climbs because it is resisting the redirection of the curve. It is moving according in the path of least resistance according to the laws of conservation of energy. Two predictions: This will only work in horizontal directions and only around an axis. I also believe it requires continuous control and adjustment. That it looks simple understates the very small adjustments needed for the observe movement. And no Ophiolite, I do not have any maths for it.
  9. Details please. Give me the Krash course. But really, should someone with over 30 negative reps. be lecturing someone else about knowing the subject their posting on.

  11. jumping spider 10by ~macrojunkie If you want to see some more of these cute little critters and couple of others only their mothers could love. Google "jumping spiders" in Google images. There is maybe 50 or more images like the one above of incredible detail. It is hard to stop looking at these wondrous little killing machines. Oh, and you have to see the one wearing a water drop on it's head, its amazing.
  12. Are you saying there is someone who can see into the future? Or someone that controls the market and is fooling everyone? Or? Please explain. Yes. Nothing ventured nothing gained. No risk no reward. My favorite disclaimer was one I heard on a T.V. pitch to get people to risk their assets in the commodities market. "You may lose some, all or more than you investment" That must have been a hell of a ride for those poor suckers. I have been told that it is not for the novice. Better odds in Vegas.
  13. When anything is monetized it is subjected to the opposing forces of greed and fear. You are probably seeing some investors taking some of their profit in gold to invest in the strengthening economy. We may see gold continue to fall as investors move aggressively (Greed) into real estate or other markets. They may come running back to gold if China continues to weaken. Can the gold market support a billion Chinese running from a falling yuan? They may exchange for U.S. dollars instead (fear). Nobody knows, that's the beauty of speculation.

  15. A long period of cold (below freezing temperatures) can dry out trees as efficiently as a warm summer day. The transitions of fall and spring can be the wetter periods and help prevent fires. A more rainy winter is one of warmer temperatures while some of the really colder winters have less snow, go figure. All it takes is a colder and less rainy winter and spring and you can have a very dry forest. Add to this man has changed the natural balance of the forests, they have in many areas an unnatural quantity of forest floor debris. The fires before human management burned to their own natural limits, consuming debris periodically in fast moving but lower intensity burns. So there may be a combination of several factors that produced this unusual occurrence. An unusually cold and dry period preceding is most likely the cause. Find some records of winter jet streams over the last 10 years or so, I'll bet you will see the arctic cold spending a little more time there than usual. arc

    Yay, GUNS!

Do you think they are? Bombs are usually not carried around in the pants of gangsters. http://www.lapdonline.org/get_informed/content_basic_view/1396 The County and City of Los Angeles are the “gang capital” of the nation. There are more than 450 active gangs in the City of Los Angeles. Many of these gangs have been in existence for over 50 years. These gangs have a combined membership of over 45,000 individuals. Gang membership in Los Angeles has continued to increase over the past five years even though there have been periodic crime decreases. One of the major factors contributing to increased gangs, gang membership and violence has been the lucrative narcotics trade, with rival gangs vying for the greatest market share. Gangs are not a new phenomenon. During the last three years, there were over 16,398 verified violent gang crimes in the City of Los Angeles. These include 491 homicides, nearly 7,047 felony assaults, approximately 5,518 robberies and just under 98 rapes. These individuals have an inseparable self image interwoven with guns. Arming themselves with poorly made firearms will not increase the general public's safety. Are you saying a heavily regulated country like the U.K. has gun packing gangs proportional to the U.S? Requiring law abiding citizens to forfeit their firearms while 1.4 million members in 33,000 gangs illegally arm themselves to engage in crime and murder with what appears to be impunity would seem a little out of balance. The absolute failure of both alcohol and drug prohibition should be evidence enough that prohibition would only provide a market for illegal firearms and furnish the gang's with additional revenue sources that in turn will produce additional gang violence. Those are the lessons already learned. I would welcome an attempt by you to show how this would have a different outcome. arc
  20. It is caused by several factors, one being the ocean current called the California current that runs east to British Columbia where it then turns south and continues along the coast down to California. This is a cold current to begin with but is lowered additionally when the north easterly winds produce up-welling of cold deep waters along the California coast. Another factor is that warm air holds more water molecules than cold air, so as the summer progresses the warming atmosphere incrementally holds more moisture in its expanding gasses. When these two thermal content bodies meet along the coast the cold waters of the current cause the warm air to cool quickly. As the air molecules thermally contract the water molecules are forced out of the atmosphere, forming the famous California fog. arc

    Yay, GUNS!

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=yJDDgSqOsHM No, not at all. My point is legal guns have been available through manufacturers of known origins, with serial numbers and paper trails. Citizens prefer quality that assures reasonable expectations. The quality of the guns available have for a long time been superb. Even the smaller and inexpensive but still legal "Saturday night specials" have a degree of functional quality that reveals a higher manufacturing quality control than most products of more general purposes. I would compare the current gun manufacturing processes to those of professional mechanics tools, having a wide range of performance and prices with the lower product lines providing a consistent degree of manufacturing control. These so called "home made" automatics are really guns made in clandestine shops by and/or for the use of drug related enterprises. These weapons reveal that when the guns stolen in burglaries are not available the market supplies a replacement source. It also makes strikingly clear a gun, even a fully automatic machine gun is not a complicated design. They can be made with a minimum of skill and equipment if adequate designs are available. Most people do not realize these mechanisms can be reduced to minimal parts, about as complicated as the stapler on your desk. Stolen guns are the professional criminals choice but not their only source. I see many similarities to the prohibition of alcohol and the way market forces back then and like now provide contraband and make criminals some of the richest and most powerful people in society. Having the money to corrupt all levels of government and law enforcement. Be careful what you wish for. You may be able to talk half of the gun owners out of their weapons, but illegal sources will flourish supplying the market with unregulated and truly dangerous guns that do not have any of the safety features that now protect the general public. Legal guns can be dropped without misfire, have internal and external safeties and provide performance as basic as to stop firing when the trigger is released. Do not expect these features in future drive-by shootings, store robberies or teens partying and passing around some dumb ass's new toy. I don't want to see what happens when a homemade mac11 with a 30 round clip is dropped on the floor of a crowded nightclub or used to rob a grocery store. "I didn't mean to shoot anyone" will be an even more often repeated phase. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/vc_majorthefts/gangs Some 33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs, and prison gangs with about 1.4 million members are criminally active in the U.S. today. Many are sophisticated and well organized; all use violence to control neighborhoods and boost their illegal money-making activities, which include robbery, drug and gun trafficking, fraud, extortion, and prostitution rings. According to the 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment report, gangs are responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crime in most jurisdictions, and up to 90 percent in others. We’re redoubling our efforts to disrupt and dismantle gangs through intelligence-driven investigations and new initiatives and partnerships. The paragraph above is sobering. It should be pointed out that these gangs were all built on drug profiteering, stolen guns were initially a tool of the trade and a form of currency used in street level transactions. "responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crime in most jurisdictions, and up to 90 percent in others." I would expect they would not be affected by most regulation, they haven't been so far. I also assume that the law abiding citizens that live where those activities take place have a desire to arm themselves. It seems rather ridiculous to suggest regulating law abiding citizens while these criminal elements operate with what looks to be a never ending serial criminal enterprise based on drugs that in turn perpetuates most of the crime and violence. It strikes me as ironic that the Bill of Rights appears to work better for them than the law abiding. I would be curious to see the results if American gangs were in a regulated country like the UK, would it make any difference in their activities? Would they overwhelm law enforcement the way they do in the U.S.? arc
