I loved that show, it almost killed me. When I was about 8 I tried to mimic the guy that had the cool stuff to ascend, descend and even move horizontal using various mechanical devices to hang from. At some point during an episode my parents car top carrier with its four suction cups popped into my mind. The next day I put up a ladder between the joists in my dads shop and removed them. They were about 10 -12 cm in diameter with a 1/4 -20 stud sticking out of the back. I tested one on the side of a large roll around tool chest, it seemed quite strong. I repositioned the ladder to another location where an old chrome and Formica table was stored inverted on top of the joists. I had on an old army surplus harness which I had attached some "S" hooks, earlier I had used it for climbing trees. I climbed the ladder and stuck two of the suction cups to the overturned table. I slipped the "S" hook on my harnesses chest strap into a 90 clip bolted to one of the suction cup's studs. My plan seemed foolproof, I would swing off the ladder to hang from the cup, I would then transfer to the second cup before switching to the joists with short ropes, making my way out over the floor 5 m or so and then back in a circle to the ladder. I hooked to the first cup and eased my weight onto the table top, it creaked under the additional load. I paused with one hand and one foot on the ladder, carefully watching the cup as the table ticked and groaned. It was holding! I then removed my foot, and then my hand from the ladder, I hung there for what was 10 - 20 seconds when the vacuum released. It was surprising how fast 3.6 m (12 ft) goes by when your looking up at a Formica boomerang pattern fading into the distance. I hit the floor on my butt, slightly leaning backwards. That I believe was the most pain I had experienced in those first 8 years. I don't think I hit my head, If I did it was over shadowed by the monumental pain in my rear end.

I am not an aeronautical engineer, but I do know that jet engines are less efficient at lower altitudes. It is not only easier for the engines to compress cold dense air rather than warm air, but more cold air can be compressed thus producing more power. This combined with less aerodynamic friction at high altitude and you can see the advantages. The atmospheric pressure is not important because the compressor portion of the engine negates those values. The most critical aspect of air temperature is during takeoff and landings at or below sea level in higher temperatures where an engine failure could require the remaining engine to save the day. ( Death Valley is 86 meters below sea level and holds the record for the highest reliably reported air temperature in the world, 56.7 °C (134 F) on July 10, 1913.) The increase in temperature proportionally decreases not only the jet engines efficiency but its rated maximum power at a most critical time. This reduction in power can in some circumstances like at airports in equatorial regions require the reduction of the planes MTOW (Maximum takeoff Weight) to increase the safety margin. If the pilot tried to compensate for the reduction in rated power output with more throttle the engine could over heat and possibly melt the turbine blades or even completely fail. arc

Which energy source is going to replace Petroleum??!
arc replied to bablunicky's topic in Engineering
HOLY CRAP, I didn't know there was such a company. I was just looking for an amusing example of a ridicules small scale attempt. I thought it would highlight the "smaller is not better" idea. Sorry Enthalpy, I had no Idea someone was attempting this under that name, doh. Wait a minute. Hold on, I haven't found that exact name. I might be in the clear. whew. -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hahn David Charles Hahn (born October 30, 1976), also called the "Radioactive Boy Scout" or the "Nuclear Boy Scout", is an American who attempted to build a homemade breeder nuclear reactor in 1994, at age 17. A scout in the Boy Scouts of America, Hahn conducted his experiments in secret in a backyard shed at his mother's house in Commerce Township, Michigan. While his reactor never reached critical mass, Hahn attracted the attention of local police who found radioactive materials in the trunk of his car. His mother's property was cleaned up by the E.P.A. ten months later as a Superfund cleanup site. Hahn attained Eagle Scout rank shortly after his reactor was dismantled. Hahn received a merit badge in Atomic Energy and spent years tinkering with basement chemistry which sometimes resulted in small explosions and other mishaps. He was inspired in part by reading The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments, and tried to collect samples of every element in the periodic table, including the radioactive ones. Hahn diligently amassed this radioactive material by collecting small amounts from household products, such as americium from smoke detectors, thorium from camping lantern mantles, radium from clocks and tritium (as neutron moderator) from gun sights. His "reactor" was a bored-out block of lead, and he used lithium from $1,000 worth of purchased batteries to purify the thorium ash using a Bunsen burner. Hahn posed as an adult scientist or professor to gain the trust of many professionals in letters, despite the presence of misspellings and obvious errors in his letters to them. Hahn ultimately hoped to create a breeder reactor, using low-level isotopes to transform samples of thorium and uranium into fissionable isotopes. The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor Corporation began its humble beginnings like many other start-ups, just a boy and his dreams in a shed. arc -
Do we know of anyone whose Genes cover the whole Globe?

It appears that the Mongolian leader Genghis Khan is the winner of the "man with the most prodigy" award. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/02/0214_030214_genghis.html An international group of geneticists studying Y-chromosome data have found that nearly 8 percent of the men living in the region of the former Mongol empire carry y-chromosomes that are nearly identical. That translates to 0.5 percent of the male population in the world, or roughly 16 million descendants living today. The study looked at blood samples collected over a period of ten years from more than 40 populations living in and around the former Mongol empire. The Y-chromosome is passed on as a chunk of DNA from father to son, basically unchanged through generations except for random mutations. These random mutations, which happen naturally and are usually harmless, are called markers. Once the markers have been identified, geneticists can go back in time and trace them to the point at which they first occurred, defining a unique lineage of descent. In this particular instance, the lineage originated 1,000 years ago. The authors aren't saying that the genetic mutations defining the lineage originated with Khan, who was born around 1162; they are more likely to have been passed on to him by a great great grandfather. It appears Genghis and his sons took advantage of their positions of authority. 142 Mongol Empire divisions Khanat 13th Century Map. -

http://science.nasa...._magneticfield/ A supercomputer model showing flow patterns in Earth's liquid core. Dr. Gary A. Glatzmaier - Los Alamos National Laboratory - U.S. Department of Energy. This article states that globally the magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century. And according to Dr. Glatzmaier; "The field is increasing or decreasing all the time," "We know this from studies of the paleomagnetic record." According to the article; Earth's present-day magnetic field is, in fact, much stronger than normal. The dipole moment, a measure of the intensity of the magnetic field, is now 8 × 1022 amps × m2. That's twice the million-year average of 4× 1022 amps × m2. The mantle in this model is displaced by the thermal expansion of the outer core's liquid iron from the increased amplitude of current within the magnetic field's magnetohydrodynamic generator. The mantle's outward movement, against the force of gravity, produces a strain energy response as the mantle's viscosity resists the expansion, creating thermal heating of the mantle material as the strain tension is released. The strain energy response and thermal release increases proportionally to the distance from the mantle-core boundary, culminating at the crust-mantle boundary with maximum expansionary movement and strain energy thermal heating. The mantle's outer boundary surface area is stretched out and torn producing melting of the surrounding surface area materials. This thermal heating of the crust-mantle boundary coincides with the expansionary movement of the crust by the displaced mantle, providing a link between the thermal forcing of Earth's ocean and atmosphere to historic periods of plate tectonic expansion and contraction. As an example, the extension of the Basin and Range Area is dated to the Miocene Epoch (5.3 - 23.03 MYA). The province is believed to be the result of tectonic extensional processes that began around 17 million years ago in the Early Miocene. It was considered a warmer climate period than the following Pliocene and Pleistocene Epochs that were cooler periods of climate that coincide with the Himalayan and Andes mountain building periods, which according to this model are the result of a cooling of the outer core producing a contraction in the mantel/crust. These structures would require large scale subduction and displacement of crustal gravitational potential energy into the folded and raised rock strata. These mountain structures occurred while the Earth's climate went into a period of Ice Ages. This model gives significant, but not unambiguous, evidence that the thermal variability of the outer core produces coordinated geologic restructuring and climate forcing. arc

No, I would have done the same. I reread my post after your response and you were more than gracious. Competition and suffering are the parents of our species, and so we are damned to be their children forever. I think that has begun to change rather quickly and recently. The fate of those with Downs syndrome for example has changed completely in the last 40 years. They were once institutionalized due to the "institutional" philosophy that left them with bleak existences in most cases. Now they are integrated into society, living in residential neighborhoods and working to their capacities. One visit to a Special Olympics event shows how far things have come. This is remarkable and gives hope for the future of all of use who someday may be dependent on society. The good in this world can be found and nurtured. We can override our programming, and implement new protocols. This is where many find their purpose and reason to live. arc

knownothing; My apologies, my intention was to address all those that have had these contemplation's, I believed by expressing "Why, because I was young once. I remember feeling hopeless, that the amount of effort it would take to be happy and fulfilled seemed daunting" was adequate in associating this to a common experience. My use of "you" was to imply all of us. The phrase "I grew up in a small town where you had little opportunity" is analogous to my intent. I believe this matter is simply our biology manifesting its will into our circumstances. It is telling you its time to move on. This is the mechanism of evolution that suggested to our ancestors to crawl on their fins to a larger and more oxygenated puddle. The history of life has been the history of disproportionate challenges. Some life forms and people have had fewer pressures to change, an alligator and a millionaire may be similar in this, both would require a substantial change in surroundings to elicit an adaptive response. You are experiencing natural abet disproportionate challenges on a personal level. I have always been drawn to history, it has given me a context to measure my own discomfort and my motivations to relieve it. Some of the people that had experienced the Bataan death march and subsequent captivity related to their experience many years later as an adaptation and even a period of character building that they credit to their later successes in life. This would possibly validate this mechanism as responsible for mankind's successes beyond mere survival, that continuous adaptive challenges of human caused origins are partly if not completely responsible for our large brain capacity. A forcing agent of human competition within its own species. Where was that point in human history where we had been mostly biologically adapting and then with gradual increase's in intelligence to being slowly but increasingly driving our own ship so to speak with our own cognitive consciousness. The saying "What doesn't destroy you can only make you stronger" is the frame by which the majority of humans live, whether by personal choice or not. In my area there was a cartoonist who became quite successful, he was a quadriplegic with little use of his arms and a little movement in his hands with which he made his living. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Callahan_(cartoonist) Though not mentioned in the above, he stated that the car accident that had changed his life had actually saved his life. I don't remember his exact words, but it related to his belief that the direction his life was heading was to an early grave. He had an amazing outlook for someone who was beset by what would be to most people as an unfair and overwhelming chain of events. This may be of little help to you, but it is important for everyone to subject their cognitive results to the test of time. To run the experiment the full observational period. You will only know the truth in this way. Anything less would be considered poorly done science. arc

The problem you have is this is a science site, and extraordinary claims require evidence. All you have done here so far is what I have done, tell stories. You either have to show irrefutably evidence that you can do these things or they are just your delusions and/or stories. We could have story time all day long, I or anybody else could make any extraordinary claim and so what where is the proof. This is not to insult you, but it is just common courtesy to everyone who comes to this site, they expect a high degree of integrity by this organisation. They demand a high degree of proof to standout from the pseudoscience sites. You will probably have difficulty maintaining anyone's interest unless you can deliver the proof of your claims. arc

I think this is a common thought by many people. I would assume mostly of those between the ages of 14 - 24. Why, because I was young once. I remember feeling hopeless, that the amount of effort it would take to be happy and fulfilled seemed daunting. Where would you even begin? What would it take for you to reach an acceptable degree of existence. Unfortunately this society will not provide you with a free ride and the lottery is to great of a long shot for most. So you spend your time contemplating the existence of all of humanity as if it was placed on an arm of a scale. But what is on the other end of the bar? What is balanced against all of humanity? You have place yourself. By appointing yourself the great jurist, the one to decide the fate of all. Seems like such a selfish idea doesn't it. All of humanity needing to balance one person.

This thread reminded me of the long lost days of childhood. I remember the first time I walked home alone after dark from a friends house. I bet some will remember running most of it. By the time you arrived home your heart was racing and you were out of breath. You had been trying to outrun your fear. Your young impressionable mind was imagining a constant stream of terrifying suggestions to motivate your progress. This is the gift your ancestors gave you. It served them well and you are the living proof of that. Over time you eventually assumed it was safe and became calmer, maybe even enjoying it as more of an adrenaline rush. I remember having to experience the fear again walking home on a stormy night, the many horror movies I had consumed were regurgitated by my mind to drive my legs to speeds never before seen. This fear that we experienced as children was irrational in almost all cases if you grew up in a reasonably safe environment. Do you remember at what age you overcame the fear your mind imposed on you. You knew you were safe despite being alone after dark with a long walk ahead. That is when you became an adult or merely gained the capacity to maintain the rational control of your mind. These supernatural experiences that people talk of seem very much similar to those irrational feelings I had as a child. Alone and fearful, hearing and even seeing dangerous things on that dark and windy night. arc

They're really saying "I love you" I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow They'll learn much more than I'll ever know And I think to myself, what a wonderful world Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world Oh yeah

Essay, great points. I think some of that denial, frustration and anger has been appearing in the pro AGW group in the form of mocking and dehumanization of what they view is an inability of group 1 to progress in a rational context. This may be due to a lack of historical understanding of group 1, but more likely is just ad hoc reaction originating out of the frustration and anger dynamic. I would hate to think this is considered rational by its users. The "White evangelical Christians" that DH referred to makes up a portion of Group 1, it is what remains of a larger pre-cultural revolution philosophy that was widely held at one time, it is unlikely to change substantially due to its reduction to a core configuration. I think you will see moderation around some social issues, but it is now pretty homogeneous so they are unlikely to change significantly. I see the pro AGW group as having bigger problems than just group 1's lack of cooperation. Science is actively campaigning the AGW cause while its individual constituents work at their individual vocations that as a whole increase the effectiveness of of locating and extracting oil and gas reserves. From satellites in orbit to deep ocean exploration these systems have required the contribution of uncounted scientist. For all their frustration about the non-scientific public's apathy, the combined contribution of many fields of science continually make oil and gas viable long into the future. There are many a new car purchased with income derived directly and even more indirectly from this source. Does everyone know for sure how much their work contributes to this perpetuation. I'm sure the thought is there on the back of everyone's mind. I remember in 1977 when oil was projected to run out by the end of the decade. It is now extended beyond mine and my children's lifetimes. This is extraordinary considering since that early decadal prediction China has greatly increased its proportion in the world oil market and AGW has been revealed as an eminent threat. I feel the need to use that tired analogy of the Titanic again. The ship was only made possible through the contributions of untold number of scientists who's research in every aspect of state of the art technology made that ship possible. Possible to speed faster than the lookouts could see the dangers beyond. DH, I want to dig into this a little. "Because of their intentional ignorance and irrational beliefs, they are easily duped, and they are being duped by two key groups. One group is those industries that have a lot to lose should climate change legislation be passed". That has the slight smell of an irrational conspiracy theory. DH, Those industries employ how many scientist and engineers? Are they accountable for their contribution to these crimes? They knowingly work to make the company successful. Or are they duped also? Or are they willing participants in crimes against society? I'm sure they would all leave if they were not chained to their desks. Its so much like the Nuremberg trials; "I was just following orders. I did not know what was happening". Maybe this denial and grief with a touch of guilt has manifested in a previously undiagnosed group. So it may be that all people have an individual and collective difficulty evaluating their own contribution and responsibility regarding the current situation. And strike out at groups that they have personal issues towards. Maybe an Anthropological attitude would be more constructive. After all who are the ones that are considered the rational ones. arc -

Here's a crazy thought. That smaller electric assembly # 25, could it be a switch that is installed on the inside door latch when the car is equipped with electric locks. When assembly 5/24 is installed the bar is removed from the manual mechanism and is left with no use and no place to go at the electric lock mechanism, but the other end is still connected to the inside door latch. When a malfunction occurs in the switch assembly a unsuspecting repair attempt would be mislead by the errant rod end. You slowly go insane looking for the attachment point that doesn't exist. Diabolical!
