And how exactly to you suggest we get this parasite into every human body in the world? Finding a cure is one thing, making that cure affordable and available even in third world countries is another thing entirely.

I realize that it is totally different. My point was simply that intelligence is NOT necessarily the best way to survive. I didn't really think about that definition too much. In fact, I pulled it right out of my ass. You're not looking at it on a level plain. Humans compete with other intelligent creatures, so naturally if intelligent aliens come to earth, we are the ones who respond. What if a new type of bacteria were to enter the ecosystem, would we be the ones to respond to it? Unless it was deadly to us, it would just be another organism living in the same environment as us. However, to pre-existing bacteria the new bacteria presents serious competition and they must respond or gradually die out. Certainly not perfectly analogous but it should be enough to show that your scale is flawed. -

Behind? I would say that we are chasing many many species ourselves. The only true measure of evolutionary success, imho, is quantity or prevalence. A creature is evolutionarily great if it is dominant within it's own species and found in great numbers everywhere. Sound like humans? Think again. How many humans live in a cubic inch of seawater? My point is: intelligence is just another means of survival, no more or less valid than the next technique. -
One major problem with your "Hyperintelligent" strategy (besides impossibility) is you may have noticed that historically, smart people are much more capable at seizing power for themselves. A highly intelligent work force means a quick to downfall of the dictatorship. The only reason the US is still around: stupid citizens.

I think it's great that you chose to volunteer your time, but making people do community service does NOT make them more responsible. It just makes them resent the institution that forced them into it. Because all of my experience with volunteering has been of the required variety, I find that I dislike doing it. Some of my volunteer work has been great fun, but I'm always going to be aware that I don't have any choice about it. If you choose to do it, then you feel really good about helping people. If your forced to do it, it feels like you're being exploited.

Who says it will be a primate that will evolve intelligence next? It could be a dolphin or a bird... It really depends on the circumstances. Example: Humans destroy almost all of crow habitat, the crows have to adapt and evolve to develop techniques for surviving in a city. Just some random speculation. -

I haven't noticed these qualities in Dawkins' work. Then again I have only read a little bit of his stuff. Could you point to some articles or quotes where this is clear? If not, that's fine too, but I won't change my opinion of the man just because I heard some rumors. I agree that excessive speculation is pointless, but educating the general public, at least on a conceptual level, about important aspects of modern science... that IS a worthy aim. -
I'll have to agree with that. Some pretty bad spelling too. Rather interesting though, obviously some primary research into the eating habits of snails.

I'm only in 9th as well. I really like this problem. I think it's one of those where you either have it in a minute or two or you'll never get it.

I think he is referring to the community service graduation requirement in most US private schools. (not sure about US public schools) In answer: I have personal experience with this and I will say that as an ideal I really like it. In practice... it's not so much fun. Essentially I do community service instead of homework about ten days a year. That isn't so bad at all, except when you figure that I haven't even started yet and I only have until the end of May. Obviously this is just poor planning on my part and has little to do with your question.

I am doing a paper for bio class on the brains of birde, parrots and crows in particular. I have tried google and google scholar, neither has helped much so far. Does anyone have links related to this subject? I would appreciate any and all. thank you.

If I am remembering correctly, Einstein was the first to put this idea forward. It was kind of his dream, he was never able to prove it though. It makes a lot of sense to me, if matter is dramatically curved (maybe curled) spacetime, then gravity is explained. I don't know, It is kinda farfetched.

When I created this problem I had been reading the SciAm article on the big bang and the expansion of space. They said something about acceleration of expansion and then what would happen if the acceleration were accelerating or something along those lines. It was a while ago. So I began to think. "what if you had layers of acceleration? all accelerating each other? Maybe some deceleration too? What would the result be? The result was a pretty tricky math puzzle. Here is what i did: x=objects acceleration y=x's acceleration z=y's acceleration c= any constant. In this case 1 d=objects deceleration p=resultant motion So we start with x=0, y=0, z=0, c=1, d=1(!the trick!), p=0 I will write it as if it were a generic programming language. p=p+x p=p+d x=x+y y=y+z z=z+c d=d-c so we get the pattern 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 2 -1 0 1 3 3 -2 -1 4 6 4 -3 0 10 10 5 -4 6 20 15 6 -5 21 35 21 7 -6 50 51 28 8 -7 21 is the number I was looking for, amazingly you came up with it using some other process. Its pretty impressive that you got the next two digits correctly. I still don't understand what exactly you did. Care to explain again?
