  1. Thanks for the great info and links Widdekind!
  2. Should we end tax exemptions for churches? YES!
  3. Richard Dawkins
  4. nanotechnology. If this can be developed to a sufficient level it can address many of the problems we are dealing with, of course there are likely to be unforeseen consequences as well. Political science. Let's get it back on topic instead being a media circus, let's apply the principles, elect those who really want to help the world, not just their pocketbook.
  5. There was a segment on Nova Science Now about lice --- in particularly the differences in pubic lice and head lice and how that genetic division pinpoints when we evolutionarily lost our fur. See here: http://video.pbs.org/video/1790635347/
  6. But also a primary component of science is skepticism. You must have it, accept it, and hold it in all your work.
  7. I don't like uppity moderators that delete postings because of their own personal issues.

    Black Hole

Yep, thanks, looked it up, but I appreciate it.
  9. Definitely a place to not move to as well. I'm already too close.
  10. Now that's just mean-spirited!
  11. Had never heard the term: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav but in Wales? Guess so....now off my list of places to move to.

    Black Hole

I'm still not sure what that says. Does the Schwarzchild radius vary depending on the "size"/mass of the black hole? Okay, I looked it up on Wikipedia.....got it. Thanks.

    Black Hole

But wait doesn't the whole concept of mass break down inside a black hole? Maybe the size (diameter?) of the event horizon world correspond to the previous mass consumed?
  14. I'm currently reading "The Trouble with Physics...." by Lee Smolin and he mentions Antony Valentini. I found this on Amazon published late last year. Anyone read it or familiar with his work? http://www.amazon.com/Quantum-Theory-Crossroads-Reconsidering-Conference/dp/0521814219/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267880664&sr=1-1 Quantum Theory at the Crossroads: Reconsidering the 1927 Solvay Conference Product Description The 1927 Solvay conference was perhaps the most important in the history of quantum theory. Contrary to popular belief, questions of interpretation were not settled at this conference. Instead, a range of sharply conflicting views were extensively discussed, including de Broglie's pilot-wave theory (which de Broglie presented for a many-body system), Born and Heisenberg's 'quantum mechanics' (which apparently lacked wave function collapse or fundamental time evolution), and Schrödinger's wave mechanics. Today, there is no longer a dominant interpretation of quantum theory, so it is important to re-evaluate the historical sources and keep the debate open. This book contains a complete translation of the original proceedings, with essays on the three main interpretations presented, and a detailed analysis of the lectures and discussions in the light of current research. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in physics and in the history and philosophy of quantum theory. (I don't know is this is the right subforum to post this or not...please move if appropriate.) mod note: moved to book talk

    Black Hole

I don't think there is any evidence to support your "turtles all the way down" hypothesis.
  17. Riiiiight. Blame the Victim!
  18. No but....see my first sentence....and in a way it is about how we got here, because it may have been the same way.
  19. I just watched this over at TED: http://www.ted.com/talks/sean_carroll_on_the_arrow_of_time.html
  20. Dang! Shouldaknown!
  21. I always think Wikipedia is a good place to start as long as you keep the salt nearby and read other sources as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitation
  22. No. 2012 is when the LHC finally goes "on-line" and the universe starts over.
  23. Of course! Some (with some pretty convincing) reasoning argue that life arrived here via comet.
  24. Based on the text above.....I have a feeling you may be right.
