Dual Major in Computer Science and Philosophy
EdEarl replied to SaggyWax's topic in Science Education
It seems OK to me, but I have been retired for many years so do not know the job market. -
I do not have books to recommend, but khanacademy.org is a good place for them to learn several subjects, and it does a good job of making a game of learning. Lessons range from kinder to university levels. The site teaches math ,chemistry, physics, and biology, among others. It also has tools for teachers/mentors that show each students progress. There is a TED Talk on the khan academy page in which Bill Gates introduces khan academy. It is free and very good. There are other free online learning sites, too.

Everyone is different. One person may better understand people, another art, and someone else mathematics. You must decide which thing is best for you, perhaps with help from teachers, family and friends. Unfortunately, people may give advice that is based by their likes and skills, instead of considering your likes and skills. Thus, consider why someone gives advice to be sure they are not biased from their own perspective, rather than yours. Also, consider that an education teaches many things, including critical thinking, writing, and math that apply to most scientific disciplines, as well as information specific to a given field. The order you will be given classes will first include subjects that apply to many kinds of science, which will give you time to adjust your curriculum as you progress through one degree plan to another more advanced degree. I recommends you choose whatever you like best, and keep in mind you can change your mind later. Although, if you change your mind too often or too late, you may need to take extra classes; therefore, do the best you can to make the right decision early. Good luck And, welcome to sfn.

A ping is merely a sound with high frequency harmonics, which improves resolution, and its source position and time are known, which may simplify the math necessary to make an image. However our eyes form images using ambient light, not a strobe on our head. Similarly sonar can make an image from ambient sound.

Extraterrestrial life virtually has to exist
EdEarl replied to Hypercube's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Some evidence suggests we would not exist, except for the moon being as large as it is and Jupiter where it is. If true, earth like planets with intelligent life are likely to be rare, because the probibality of all three occurring elsewhere is smaller than any earth size rocky planet in the habitable zone. -
We do not do homework, but will help. Read the definition of chemical reaction in wikipedia, at least guess at which are which, and someone will help you. Do the same for exothermic reactions.

Yes, back in the IBM 360 era, motherboards had few if any components, except sockets for boards with the circuits. Before that, components were mounted on metal chassis, and wires were soldered to components, and sometimes wires were wrapped around screws on terminal strips. There were other primitive things such as vacuum tubes.

Agnosticism and ignosticism are different. I agree God is a human construct. And, thinking about God can be logical from a psychological, sociological, or philosophical point of view. Whether you choose theism, atheism or skepticism (ignosticism) is personal, and you may or may not share that point of view with others. There are often social consequences of telling friends and family your beliefs are different than theirs. And, a person may suffer if they do not tell, too. IMO the important thing is to be kind to yourself, everyone and everything around you. It is not always an easy thing to do, because others may be unkind. And, occasionally you may be in a situation that prevents you from being kind to all, and you must choose. These issues are universal. They have been studied by countless people, many who have written books to share their thoughts with humanity. And, countless others will follow similar paths as long as man exists. Yet, we alone decide on how to live our lives.

Search for "day Tesla coil" in YouTube for directions. Best to use a battery for power, rather than AC from your house, for safety. Select plans that use battery power, if there are any.

As an agnostic I accepted the possibility that a God exists. Using logic I cannot either prove or disprove that God exists. Also, AFAIK no expirement has ever demonstrated that God has done anything to let us know of God's existence. Thus, being either theistic or atheistic requires suspention of logic. In other words, belief is not logical. The only logical position is to be skeptical, to accept we are too ignorant to know one way or another whether God exists. If someone wants to believe, as the Heaven's Gate cult did, that a comet is a spaceship that will take you to heaven, so be it. But there is no logic that can prove it or disprove it.

I answered why I think people believe in God, which was: They ignore the fact that praying to regrow an amputated limb never works. They see proof whenever they pray for something that can occur randomly does happen, for example they may pray for someone with cancer to get well. When the person gets well, they attribute it to their diety; although, the person would have gotten well without prayer...at least a percentage of people do have spontaneous remission from cancer. Proving a particular person got well from cancer is impossible, and double blind studies are always questioned by one side or the other as not conclusive. People also follow strong leaders, some good and some bad. Consider what happened at Jonestown, when people followed Jim Jones. They want someone who makes them feel safe, and believe in the image of a benevolent heaven where everything is fairytale nice. And Jim Jones lead them to commit suicide, or had them murdered if they would not. I find it disturbing that so many people believe in religion. But, my family believes I am an agent of the devil for not believing. I am Buddhist ignostic, less violent and less bigoted than they. People have nutty beliefs, imo.

The incident and reflection angles of a ball are equal, except for spin (English for billiards players). Though, friction makes it hard to move a ball without spin. The surface it hits must be smooth, too. Photons have spin, but I think it is around the direction of the path of the photon, not like typical spin of a ball.

I have never heard of someone who had an amputated limb, pray to god to have it regrow and that god answered the prayer.

Maybe not a bad idea for retrofitting existing homes, but new homes can be built to use solar heat with nearly zero other other energy needed. Air conditioning is another issue not addressed by either spent nuclear or solar for heat. Both can generate electricity, of course.

This forum is about learning. Part of learning is clear communication. Clear communication is difficult on a good day, and writing and punctuation are part of it. You want to play with us, play hard. No one will claim we are push overs. Do the best you can. No one is perfect, but not trying leads to this kind of conversation, or worse. I can't figure out how to copy and paste on this friggin tablet, which is $#!++¥, but I manage.

4ever your posts aren't making sense to either pwagen or me, but pwagen makes sense to me. Marriage is completely off topic, with different motivations. So is fear of flying.
-
Luke you are not E. E. Cummings writng poetry. Please capitalize and punctuate. I'm using a frigging tablet that's always messing with my head, by correcting things incorrectly. If I can take the time to answer you with my best effort, you should ask questions with capitalization and punctuation. Do it again, and I'll ignore you.

The mass of a star does not disappear when it runs out of nuclear fuel. It begins with mostly light elements such as hydrogen, helium and lithium. The nuclear energy that makes a star 'burn' comes from fusion as the hydrogen fuses into helium (same as hydrogen bomb). When the hydrogen is all fused into helium, helium fuses, and heavier elements are made, and in turn heavier elements fuse into yet heavier elements until fusion makes iron. Iron does not fuse. Nuclear fusion stops. The star suddenly cools and cannot be an ionized gas. Gravity pulls the gasses towards the center as if to make solid iron, but gravity is so strong it squeezes all the empty space from atoms creating a black hole. Less massive stars do not become black holes. Some become neutron stars. And, ones even less massive, such as our sun, become red giants that eventually cool into dwarfs. A black hole has great mass and gravity.

Space is not quite empty. It is filled with cosmic rays, including atoms traveling near the speed of light. If nothing as large as a grain of sand hits them, someday they may be eroded by cosmic ray particles until they become unrecognizable.

Genuine question about Tesla and Edison

Metal working is also a very old craft. -
IMO the 1951 film was better.

Nature is our guide. She provides microbes and plants that use nutrients in our waste as sustenance for their growth. In turn we depend on sustenance from other plants and animals. Most animals poop and pee on the ground and everything is recycled efficiently. We live in cities and need systems to prevent disease, but it is still best to process waste locally and with best efficiency and simplicity as possible.
