  1. It is possible to radiate heat a clear night sky very effectively, because it is about 3K. Thus, systems built in areas where clouds are less common (e.g., deserts) usually have a very good heat sink at night. Thermal storage could store solar heat in the day and loose heat at night (storing cold). A single cylinder(i.e., engine-alternator) Sterling engine-alternator might reliable enough to compete with solar PV--especially if the displacer is moved magnetically; thus, eliminating the crankshaft, seals, bearings, etc.
  2. I run Bionic Manager with projects SETI, Climate Prediction, and Mind Modeling. SETI always runs, but the other two are sometimes idle.
  3. There are vast differences in energy needs for a house. The best need no additional heating or cooling, and the worst are leaky and uninsulated. Each house must be evaluated to determine its solar PV needs.
  4. In the nick of time, or too late?
  5. Computer systems are already so complex that no one knows everything about them. Moreover, combining software from several programmers invariably causes unintended consequences; thus, I believe no group of people know everything about a system such as Windows. Since I expect a sentient computer to be more complex than Windows, I believe your argument will be satisfied. Specifically, "a researcher must know that there is at least 1 detail that they do not know about a computer."
  6. Also depends on whether the adhesive can be used in the rain.
  7. Can this product rival 3D printing of buildings?
  8. The efficiency of this engine is high, which is great, and it appears to be lighter weight than a rotating alternator-engine combination, which would be another advantage.
  9. It is good that solar and wind power are being installed at record rates, to help offset this loss of power.
  10. Sorry, that should have been (2.5ft)2.
  11. "A penny saved is a penny earned." Businesses that buy energy have an incentive to save energy and, thus, money. Businesses that sell energy want everyone to use more. If everyone lived in an Earthship, or other off the grid home, we would use about 15% less energy in the US and many other countries.
  12. A 60W solar panel is about 2.5ft2. In a strong wind, it might make a bicycle dangerous to ride.
  13. I believe the limit on a quick question is not number of words, but number of posts. A quick question should be one that can be stated in one post and answered in another. The alternative is a question that one asks in a thread and has many responses, possibly by several people. If someone asks a question in this thread that takes too many posts, a moderator can move it to another thread, one created for the question. Thus, one may ask any question in this, the Quick Question thread, even if it takes several posts to answer. Just don't create work for the moderators moving posts on purpose; try to keep questions in this thread that can be answered by one post.
  14. Johnny, I believe many of us know about the methane hydrate.
  15. First I've heard of this idea for dark matter and energy. It sounds promising.
  16. Why do you think it is necessary to increase the efficiency of solar cells. I agree it would be a good thing, but why a necessity?
  17. Scientists are often engineers, because they build things to do their experiments.
  18. I know of nothing as you describe being now sold. Many people use cell phones for all communications, including voice mail, text, email, Internet, and apps. An inexpensive computer might be configured to connect with Earth Link and get your mail; it depends on what services Earth Link provides. You can call and ask about connecting with a 9-inch screen, Android, tablet computer, which you can get for about US$100.
  19. According to CNN, there are several options from 1GB to 10MB with reasonable pricing. It would be nice to get the opinion of a user who has experienced it and can compare to other Internet service.
  20. Anyone have any personal knowledge of this statement? If so, is it true?
  21. Perhaps there is more evidence that eating processed meat (or any meat) is less healthy than not eating meat. I do not have access to the ajcn articles, only the abstracts.
