There is only one source of energy, which is not actually renewable. Nuclear energy, which can be fission or fusion. The sun creates energy by fission, which is the source of both fossil fuels and renewable energy on the Earth. Fossil fuels are the result of ancient vegetation that grew because the Sun provided the energy for growth; these plants died and left fossil remains that we use as coal and oil today. The sun energizes solar cells directly, heats surfaces, and causes winds, tides, waves, etc. that comprise the renewable energy suite we use today, except for geothermal energy, which is a combination of fission and the Earth cooling. Renewable combustibles include wood and other plant matter burned for heat and chemicals such as alcohol and biodiesel that are burned for heat; the heat may be used directly or used to run engines, which sometimes make electricity. Solar thermal heat for buildings, including homes and workspaces is effective and economical. PV, wind and nuclear will be used to generate electricity. Biochemicals such as alcohol, biodiesel and hydrogen can run the transportation system, but it will take a long time to build the infrastructure, which includes millions of acres of farms. In the mean time, we will have to use lighter weight more economic vehicles for personal transportation. Cities need to be rebuilt so that jobs and living spaces are near each other to reduce transportation costs. But, more efficient transportation and infrastructure will take a long time to change. AFAIK there is no simple solution, except to bite the bullet and make changes.

Susskind's lectures of the Theoretical Minimum, Quantum Mechanics, and others are available on youtube. The String and M-theory lectures go through what Susskind says is a simplified math of string theory for a photon. Perhaps more books are coming.

There are a variety of opinions from spiritual to scientific; although, scientific opinions are vague. The brain is physical, neurons, axons, dendrites and synapse can be counted and plotted. However, the mind is ephemeral and transient, similar to a database or program that is always in flux. At the moment there is no way to record the changing states of a 100-billion neurons and 500-million-million synapses, and if we could, we would not know how to interpret them. At the moment we can monitor the flow of blood in areas of the brain that contain thousands of synapses. And, we can monitor the electrochemical firing of a few neurons. A gross map of the brain shows where we hear, see, smell, taste, and feel. Similarly, we know the motor neurons that control various muscles, and the areas that process sight, language, mathematics, etc. A few neurons have been found that elicit memories of someone or some thing. A considerable amount is know about the physiology and processes in neurons. However, I would liken our knowledge of the brain to that of our galaxy, the Milky Way. We know quite a bit about the Earth, a little bit about the Solar system, and almost nothing about the 100 billion stars that comprise the galaxy, nor the 500-million-million planets that obit those stars. We are a long way from understanding the brain, much less the mind.

Physical abuse may leave scars that are visible, but the more common mental abuse of teaching children to obey unconditionally leaves scars that are almost invisible, but they are, nonetheless, debilitating. Once a child stops asking, "Why," and begins to believe because someone says one should believe, the natural curiosity of childhood is lost, the light of curiosity is snuffed, and it is very hard to reawaken. It is a tragedy of epic proportion.

Anyone who has been tossed by a twister, cowered by a quake, or sequestered by a snow slide will have respect for nature. Unfortunately, they may continue to pollute and otherwise disrespect nature.
-
IMO you have an uncivilized view of civilization. We are part of nature, and nothing can eliminate that fact; everything in the universe is part of nature, because we are all made from atoms and must live within the laws of nature. We have no choice, and never will.

Thanks. Please forgive me, I copied a post to get some examples and did not remove the questions and comments.

NO! The people on this forum will not help someone do something dangerous. The rules prohibit such things. See: Section 2, Rule 3b.

Do you understand the language? It is the tool you use to write your assignment for the class.

You are supposed to write a program. What language will you learn in your class?

If a crackpot is someone whose ideas are from a drug induced stupor from smoking crack and pot, then it isn't me, and is derogatory to call someone a crackpot. Some people probably think my idea of treating drug addicts in the health care system instead of penal system is crackpot. But, the US has been doing that for over a hundred years and the problem is as bad as it has ever been and maybe worse. The penal system has not helped and has cost over a trillion dollars for the war on drugs. I believe we should at least try using the health care system for drug addicts, I think it would be better than making the same mistake over and over again; that is, making criminals of every addict once they have been in prison, where they learn to kill and steal to support their habit. My crackpot idea: it is better to make laws that allow doctors to give away drugs, rather than risk lives by drug addicts who mug people for money to buy drugs. If that makes me a crackpot, I'm happy to wear the label.

Sparta had a brutal culture. They practiced eugenics; imperfect babies were killed. Male citizens of Sparta at the age of seven went into a military education system that sometimes killed weak students, and the graduates of this education system were the only citizens of Sparta--the elite. Little is known of how female children were educated. The citizens of Sparta kept slaves who worked fields and did all menial labor. Slaves were not treated well, and were by law beaten several times each year for no particular reason. The boys who survived military training, were incredible soldiers. In general, Spartan society is a poor model for anyone to emulate.

LilBo titled this thread, "Sister Theory of Everything," but it is not actually a theory. Pointing that out is not being harsh, it is being honest. And, I didn't make any statements about LilBo, except I don't know her. This is my point exactly, you've seen two's compliment in binary and know it exists there and automatically say the same process isn't apply-able else where, EVEN WHEN ITS RIGHT INFRONT OF YOUR EYES. I demonstrated the exact same method on decimal,.....did i not? You can do a decimal compliment on decimal numbers, but you can do a two's compliment only on binary numbers, because the two refers to the radix of the number on which you take the compliment. See: <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" data-cke-saved-href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two" s_complement"="">Wikipedia and Wikipedia

Overpopulation makes it worse, but when people throw trash out of a car or truck and leave it on the side of the road, that is not due to overpopulation, it is mistreating the Earth. Our burning fossil fuels, one cubic mile of oil per year, is mistreating the earth because that oil turns into CO2. If everyone alive today took good care of the Earth, the Earth could take care of us forever at the present population.

LittleBoPeep, I'm gonna call you LilBo; I hope you don't mind. I don't know you or why you are posting here, and you don't know me. Your post is, forgive me, a bit strange--we get lots of strange posts. Perhaps you are trolling, because your life is miserable and you need to communicate but don't know what else to do. If that's the case, send me a PM and we can get real at tell each other about our miserable lives. Perhaps you are delusional or compulsive and have a need to communicate your strange theory of everything. Perhaps you are naive and do not understand enough science and mathematics to know how to make a theory. For sure, I don't know what motivates you. But, I'll try to teach you a bit about science, math and theories. Let's start with a simple theory, which must be included in your theory of everything...that's what a theory of everything does, it includes all other theories. The theory I'll talk about is the theory of speed, distance and time. In words, it can be stated as a thing, for example a car, moving at some speed, S, (in miles per hour, kilometers per hour, or inches per year) will move a distance, D, in time, T. Mathematically, it is stated as follows: [math]D=S/T[/math] This theory allows you to predict the distance, D, a thing will travel if you know speed, S, and the time it will travel, T. Your theory does not include the theory of speed, distance and time; therefore, it is not a theory of everything. I does not make predictions about the speed of light, the effects of gravity, or any other of the many scientific theories known to science. Your theory is not a theory, it is a "word salad." If you want to get real, PM me. If you continue this thread as you have been going, you will probably end up banned from this forum. I'll close by saying I hope you live a happy life.

Assume your society has perfected fusion of hydrogen, and that you can collect hydrogen from space. Hydrogen is the most common element in space, some of it is free hydrogen atoms, which would be hard to collect and compress, but some is water as ice as part of comets and asteroids. You can electrolyze the water to get hydrogen and oxygen, use some of the hydrogen as fusion fuel, and run an ion engine discarding oxygen or hydrogen ions to propel your craft. With the energy, you can grow food using CO2 in your atmosphere, and the food will convert water and CO2 into food and free oxygen.

I know for a fact that hospital food is bad, it is supposed to be a balanced diet, but IMO it is not. My wife, a school teacher, says the same about school lunches. I'm afraid that government food kitchens would assure poor food, not improve it.

Two different democratic presidents have installed a solar water heater on the White House, and their republican successor has removed it. Those are insignificant acts considering the energy saved/not saved, but an incredible image of wasted effort by the government regardless of which side you think was right. Once installed, there is no economic downside to leaving the solar water heaters in place. A more significant waste is refusing to change building codes to allow EarthShip homes to be built (see earthship.com). Yet, few counties in the US allow them. Almost 15% of energy used in the US is used to run homes and other residences, and there is no good reason all of them cannot be off-the-grid. In these cases government is working against common sense, and I'm sure there are other examples too.

Economists Finally Discover - Money Isn't Everything
EdEarl replied to EdEarl's topic in Science News
The amount needed will vary for many reasons. I thought it was a major milestone that economists would think of anything but money. -
REALLY! We still use steam to generate electricity?
EdEarl replied to I2CU's topic in Other Sciences
If there were a better substance than water, it would be used, especially in electrical generation where efficiency gains of a fraction of a percent are significant. -
diamond coatings as electron source in vacuum tubes

I am curious: In what way do these tubes outperform solid state devices? I would think solid state devices would be smaller and less expensive. Perhaps they mean gain per device or some aesthetic quality. I know tubes have been made that are very large and capable of operating at high voltage and current, perhaps greater than solid state devices, maybe that is what they mean by outperform.
