A lexical analyzer, such as LEX or FLEX, can be used to generate a parser for both the short and long forms. It is then necessary to replace the strings found by the parser (short/long) with their alternatives (long/short), which is easy enough to code by hand rather than using another tool.

i have disproved EVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!! darwin was wrong!

Did you ever consider that God made evolution? No need to answer, you obviously think God is not powerful enough to make evolution. -

I'm do not understand what you want. It would help if you had given requirements. One interpretation of your request is that you make a database of two columns. In one column you put short forms (e.g., "B4U"), and in the second column you put the corresponding phrase (e.g., "before you"). If you index both columns, you can find either the short form or long form by knowing either one. If your requirements are different, please explain.

It seems unlikely that a worker in a fast food restaurant, making minimum wage or little more, would spike a customer pizza with drugs that they must buy. And, I think few drugs would cause symptoms for two days. I know that morphine and hydrocodone have a short effect, only a few hours. The other medicines I take have one day effects. If it was something about the pizza, I believe food poisoning would be more likely.

The expanding universe and the speed of light.
EdEarl replied to Preserve's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Prior to 1998, everyone thought the expansion of the universe was slowing, which would mean all the galaxies in the Universe could be seen indefinitely (if there was a telescope big enough to observe them). Previously, the idea did not exist that there was an event horizon that defined an observable universe from things outside our field of observation. Since 1998, cosmologist have accepted that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, which means space time is expanding since mass cannot move faster than the speed of light. Thus, there exists an event horizon at the edge of the observable universe, beyond which space time is accelerating faster than the speed of light, carrying galaxies with it. Beyond the event horizon, we cannot see anything, because light from beyond it is moving too slow to ever get to us. The even horizon is moving away from us at the speed of light, and everything beyond it is moving faster. Galaxies that we see near the even horizon, will one day move through the event horizon and become invisible. The reason they move through the event horizon is because space time between us and them is expanding at an accelerating rate, and as their apparent velocity exceeds the speed of light, they will disappear. Note: each massive object creates a gravity well in which space time is curved by the mass. This curve is a contraction of space time, which is opposite to the expansion of space time over large distances. -

In tales of yore the barons, counts, and dukes lived lives of luxury by owning title, land and serfs who labored long and miserably. In U.S. past the country gents and bells lived lives of luxury with possessions of land and slaves who labored long and miserably. Now we have modern aristocracy living lives of luxury from portfolios that own the efforts of minimum wage employees who labor long and miserably. The more things change the more they stay the same. -

It is not fact or Truth that conservatism is ethically just nor that corporations have the right to work children 16 hours a day, pay wages that deny their employees the necessities of life, make substandard products to cheat their customers, or pay their executives more than 100,000 times the salary of their least paid employee. Laws in the US and much of the world favor the rich because they can corrupt politicians. At one time governments were mostly monarchies, which favored a few at the expense of the many. Many of them were overthrown violently, and the ruling class killed because they were too greedy. It can happen again if the powerful take too much and deny the weak too much. The world is an interconnected system, that is controlled by power; isms are irrelevant. Powerful people can stay in power as long as they do not abuse their position too much. Otherwise, history records that power centers change. In other words, powerful people need to treat the powerless classes pragmatically, and let them live with dignity. -

It is the "event horizon" beyond which we cannot see, and it is in some ways similar to the event horizon of a black hole. -

US Government Shut Down - new elections for senate and house of rep.?

Social problems, such as drug abuse cannot be solved by throwing money at them. Otherwise, the war on drugs during the past 40 years and $1 Trillion spent would have succeeded. On the other hand, denying children basic necessities makes desperate youths who are often see gangs and crime as their only alternative to abject poverty. This option creates social problems. On the other hand, children need good adult role models to teach them how to live a good life, and there are many one parent families with a drug addicted parent. This scenario also tends to lead children astray. In other words, it is possible to a great deal of money with no effect, it is possible to spend too little money with poor effect, and there are problems which cannot be solved with money. The scenarios presented above are only a few among many. Some government programs can help, but they can never be the entire solution. I personally don't know of anything that can solve these problems. In fact, I doubt they can be solved, and the best we can do is minimize their cost and effects on society. In short, we must live with social problems. Unfortunately, we often do not learn from history, and repeat our mistakes. -
Each side of the equation, can be graphed. f(x) = x f(x) = log52 (x-3)
-
log52 is a constant. I was not sure whether the problem is log5(2 (x-3)) = x or as you have done the division as (x-3)log52 = x. Overtone is probably right. But, solving algebraically is a good check to see that the graphic solution is correct.

US Government Shut Down - new elections for senate and house of rep.?
EdEarl replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
I wholly agree that the government being shut down is outside the democratic process and is extortion. It is a desperate attempt by people who have lost the democratic battle. It is not violent, but such deep feelings and hard positions sometimes lead to violence. I hope and believe it will not go that far. -

Thanks for the clarification, but it is still being challenged and must get past this challenge. The republicans want an implementation delay and some medicare reforms. If they get a delay, they will use it to fashion additional strategies to delay, revise and repeal the legislation. The Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade (abortion) in 1973 and the fight continues. -
US Government Shut Down - new elections for senate and house of rep.?
EdEarl replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
This government shutdown, IMO shows how the US is damaged by the addiction of some to big money and power. Our political process lacks moral authority and the politicians are corrupted by big campaign donations. "The more one has the more on wants," is an apt description of crack and other addictive drugs. People who lack money for food, clothing, shelter and health care can be unhappy for lack of money, but beyond those things, money cannot buy happiness. When people cannot get the necessities for life support, the prospect for violence increases. People also need a measure of dignity, and companies have been squeezing their employees pay and benefits at the risk of removing dignity, and possibly removing the necessities. I know that it makes for unhappiness, but I do not know at what point that squeeze will breed violence. There have been a few radically violent people in the US, such as Timothy McVeigh. I hope I do not see it in my life time. And, I hope the powerful are a little compassionate rather than sadistic. Whether Obama's health care program passes or not will be one measure of the character of those in power. Has their addiction placed them beyond being compassionate? -
Divide both sides of the equation by (x-3) and solve.

A galaxy in that part of space receding from us faster than the speed of light cannot be seen, because the light from such a galaxy does not travel fast enough to reach us. -

US Government Shut Down - new elections for senate and house of rep.?
EdEarl replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
We can open threads on size of government, abortion, immigration, and a myriad of other topics, and argue them ad infinitum, as they have been and are being argued by the US public. Of course, I have my own positions, which mostly I will not state, because I am sick of the arguing. However, since this is a science forum, I will mention the issue of teaching science vs creationism in school, not because I want to argue the point, but because I think it illustrates the quality of many of the myriad of public arguments, the futility of arguing, and the importance of the issues. -
US Government Shut Down - new elections for senate and house of rep.?
EdEarl replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
There are countries whose governments spend less money per capita than the US and whose citizens live longer than people in the US. Thus, I think the cost of health care in the US has in some manner gone awry. I do not know what is wrong, but suspect that there are many causes that will be difficult to pinpoint and even harder to fix. And, I think there will be blame enough to be placed on all the involved parties, the people, their doctors, the pharmaceutical companies, the medical device suppliers, the insurance industry, the fast food industry, the politicians, relevant government agencies, political power players, and industries that pollute.
