  1. Yes, YT. His question was about KNO3, not KMnO4
  2. I imagine the people smarter than me will want to know what sort of thermite.
  3. Bluenoise, I really don't know what you're talking about... .... ..................... Anyway, thanks for the help guys.
  4. No, it's not that they charge for their enterprise support, I'm fine with that (other distros like SuSE do it too). It's that they substantially edited KDE and the linux kernel to fit their market scheme, and managed to butcher them in the process. They went through like 3 or 4 major release in a period of 1-2 years just to fix all the bugs. You'll see that other distros went through major jumps at this point (like Slackware going from 4-7) just to not seem "behind."
  5. ^I seriously doubt you know how to use PHLAK. You probably just think it is cool because of all the hype around it. PHLAK is nowhere near useful for a newb. I don't even like it for its intended purpose because it's really a piece of shit. Also, Red Hat isn't even in the desktop market anymore. You probably mean Fedora. And in any case, the RH corp screwed the whole OSS and general idea of linux in the bum. In other words, I think you have no clue what you're talking about.
  6. That is because it can't tell you the value, just whether it is acidic or basic. If you think it's acidic, put the blue in and see if it turns red. If it doesn't change, then put a red one in; if that turns blue it means the solution is basic. If neither of them change then the pH is about 7. It works just like litmus dye.
  7. Find yourself a solubility chart. If you want to test for iron, then mix the water with a solution of something that will form a precipitate with iron. There are some things (like nitrates and sulfates I think) that are always soluble though, so maybe some smarter people can tell you how to test for them.

    Gardens

The gardening season is about to begin for most Americans (and I imagine most people on SFN). So let's hear your plans! I've already got about 15 potatoes in the ground. I'm also going to have some tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, pepperoncinni (hopefully, but if not then banana) peppers, and sugar snap peas. Maybe a few herbs or anything else that catches my eye or I think of. I also want to get a type of plant called a brugmansia. I think it's pretty neat and would like to try it (if you have one then please let me know!)
  9. He wasn't disputing that the heat causes it to sublimate, he was disputing YT's statement that it recombines.
  10. Well then I just hope the EPA doesn't find out. I imagine that this stuff isn't good for the environment or people in your area. (Please tell me that this isn't used as a well!)
  11. Not that I know of. Maybe you should sumbit a feature request to Gaim? Maybe you could even just write a plugin for it.
  12. "spray it into a beaker (out doors) and the butane boil off" Do you mean let it evaporate, or actually heat it?
  13. ^What temperature did you boil it at? You want it to be just over the BP of ethanol. What sort of objects can I use from the home to do distillation?
  14. Well, organic chem isn't offerred at my high school, and I'm not going to invest in an extracurricular class. I was just wondering if you've used any books or online resources in the past.
  15. I wish I knew more organic chem. Do you know any good resources to start learning from, Bud?
  16. There are some linux companies. None that I'd invest in (I think they are contrary to the spirit of linux, but I guess there are worse companies to invest in). I believe you can find Red Hat/Fedora on the stock exchange, along with SuSE (although they were acquired by Novel, so I don't know how the stock was affected). Maybe some others too. Best check out the websites/forums of distros like Gentoo, Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware, Yellow Dog, etc.
  17. Lol, thank you for that very enlightening and amusing post. What other sorts of chemicals are in the starting fluid? I know methanol isn't a problem. Would the other stuff evaporate away? I also hear that Zippo fluid works for these purposes. BTW, how does one dispose of diethyl ether?
  18. Are you talking about an aquifer with well access? Just pump it out.
  19. A match?
  20. You mean sand? lol.
  21. Diethyl ether would also work for my purposes. Do you think this is easier to obtain? Apparenly any nonpolar solvent would work, but preferable one that evaporates quickly and won't leave anything behind when it does (anything bad for human consumption, at least).
  22. How well would the other substances in Coleman fuel evaporate?
  23. Simply using a proxy will give you anonymity, but it won't trump a filtering proxy. You need a site that isn't blacklisted by that proxy yet can gives you dynamic content from other sites. If I were doing this in Perl I would use a module to get the page source from the site the person wants to view. Then I would parse it for img and href tags and modify those appropriately (so that images display. Like, if the src="image/pic.gif" then your script needs to modify it to src="http://domain.com/image/pic.gif"). Then I would have that parsed source code displayed to the client. In other words, fight proxies with proxies. Another cool option might be a content filter. What you can do is replace bad words with things that we will understand but the proxy won't ($hit, @ss, cun7, etc). That should help get around a lot of content filters too.
  24. Where can an individual obtain some petroleum ether, assuming that most chemical suppliers won't sell to individuals and that distilling gasoline is most definitely out? I imagine that some similar solvents would work equally well, so please let me know if you think there are some alternatives.
  25. This is some really good work. I support anything that underminds censorship and gives people (especially youth) more freedom on the internet. (Note: this isn't sarcasm at all). If you give me the link to your site I will try it out at school. Also, the success depends on the filtering being done. Some places just use a proxy and blacklist, so if someone tries to access a blacklisted site it tells them to piss off. Others have content filters, which will search the actual text for "inappropriate" things and block accordingly. I think your script is most likely to work with the former method (which I believe my school uses).
