Mitochondria going haywire and physical cell damage are the main hurdles that need to be overcome. What you are describing in terms of your senses is normal for individuals with Synethesia. Everyone else still mentally integrates their senses into a narrative, the senses just don't bleed into each other(though even for the majority there are exceptions to this). You probably can't reduce your heart rate below a minimum level. A good bit is automatic to try and avoid your thoughts endangering yourself. It is also possible to simply focus/direct your thoughts and control your heart rate that way. Calling forth calm in stressful situations or summoning forth strong emotion to make people respond, is probably one of the best skills you can have.
