  1. High temperature ovens are used. Not sure what the answer is to your question about friction for a polymer. http://www2.dupont.com/Teflon/en_US/products/safety/how_its_made.html
  2. At present I'm thinking Kolmogorov complexity might apply. Basically trying to decompress some (quite possibly unknowable)constant and end up with all the prime numbers.
  3. gizmag has some more details: http://www.gizmag.com/food-allergy-probiotic-therapy-gut-bacteria/33603/ Basically helping on the allergen front by triggering an immune system response. Some of Clostridia tend to be the most dangerous bacterial offenders. Makes sense from that perspective.

    Satellite Phones

Cost per minute is pricey. Reasons off the top of my head: Satellite cost. Satellite positioning(launch costs and and any further fuel expenditures). Getting your signal to the satellite which adds to the cost of the phone itself. Space junk issue(need to allow for possible damage and eventual repositioning to graveyard orbit). Labor needed to keep the system up and running. Limited life expectancy, eventually requiring another launch or in theory some means of in-space repair.
  5. Wikipedia has some material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_computer#Analog.E2.80.93digital_hybrid_computers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_computer
  6. A molecule isn't an atom... An ion is defined as an having more or less electrons than the number of protons.
  7. If you want to take a look here is a tool to calculate and some different examples/discussion of effects. http://www.smartconversion.com/unit_calculation/Acceleration_calculator.aspx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-force#Typical_examples_of_g-force

    Eugenics

You can have an amount of beef. You would probably rather have a number of people instead of an amount of people.
  9. That's fake/satire. http://www.snopes.com/politics/satire/microchip.asp http://obamacarefacts.com/obamacare-microchip-implant.php Logically it doesn't even make sense. Be too easy for literally anyone to track and fairly simple to block/remove. Anyways back to the topic at hand, I think once they figure out how to send more complex inputs into the brain we'll see the most progress. Direct data sensing and Mind-to-Mind communication. No language barriers, no worrying about egos and emotions, no looking at data converted to something you can use the standard senses to figure out. I don't think it is even possible to imagine what we'll accomplish then.
  10. Square roots have both positive and negative results. [latex]\pm \sqrt 4 = (2,-2)[/latex] So 2 squared equals 4, but taking the square root of 4 yields both positive and negative 2. So you can't end up in a logic breakdown where 2 = -2(or anything similar).
  11. @OP: Make sure what you are posting is original content and that you are not spamming the same thing across multiple sites.
  12. The concept of a superorganism would be closest to what is being described here. Personally I see the term as being more applicable to individual species than the Earth as a whole. We can provably survive without the bulk of the planet's lifeforms. If we were truly incorporated this wouldn't be possible. Conversely we can't survive long at all without other humans. More suggestive of a humanity superorganism than Gaia.
  13. I could see safety reasons as being a cause to include an emergency/backup source. How most of our own oceangoing vessels are designed. Would also need to consider a ship engaged in maneuvering(docking, entering atmosphere, etc). My simulated creatures frequently discovered sources of free energy. Their population reached astounding heights, then the program crashed... Let us assume it does not exist in our Universe and fervently hope that this is so.
  14. Several forms of body modification are along those lines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_modification#Applying_long-term_force Hard to say what would happen exactly. My guess would be simple deformation if the site were kept clean. Foot binding and neck rings are probably the closest to what you are describing. Amniotic band constriction may also be worth a look. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amniotic_band_constriction
  15. Da. You can use ferrite cores to help limit the problem, though in a Science class seems like it could be useful for demonstration.
  16. This: http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/39127/why-do-my-speakers-make-a-noise-when-my-cell-phone-gets-a-call probably has the information you desire. I'll see if I can find more info in the morning. Spell Check is your friend(and mine ).
  17. That my third wish is the last wish ever made. Personal happiness. Pass the lamp to someone else.
  18. The strange thing is that the creature is actually in the open ocean and yet is surrounded by a tank filled with humanoid creatures capable of crude vocalizations. We must monitor this situation carefully to see if it is keeping the humanoid creatures as pets or if they are being used in animal testing.
  19. Yes. http://mathbits.com/MathBits/Java/DataBasics/Namingrules.htm
  20. This appears to be memory location addressing, possibly coupled with a finite state machine. Appears at least similar to some Assembly languages. You may want to look up "race condition", likely source of the bugs.
  21. Should be fine. Most of the danger comes from the expansion/phase change extracting heat as it goes. Some can convert into hazardous gasses, but only at relatively high temperatures.
  22. I guess I am just depressed as it shouldn't matter whether law enforcement comes out full battle rattle or with nothing more than a uniform and a smile.
  23. @Acme: She has an eye condition, which causes most of said restrictions. No birds hurt, no gardens pooped in. Close in terms to what the OP was asking about. Hunting restricted to earth bound critters, even assisting us in locating indoor pests and returning them outside still living.
  24. She's practicing catch and release. If it is good enough for us 2-leggeds... She's never outside that long nor does she stray from our yard. Only 5-10 minutes while her canine protector does his thing. Weird instincts for a cat.
  25. My present cat's instincts are off. She hunts but doesn't know what to do with the animal after catching it. Doesn't much like going outside either, only at night with easy access to the door. Strangely effectively at alerting us to indoor pests. She's like a bird dog. She finds one and then meows for us to take care of it.
