  1. Network Interface Layer As to the second, you answered your own question, 'application Gmail'.
  2. People have been using internet cafe's for quasi-legal gambling operations. Haven't heard of anything after the crackdown a few years back, but there had been a number of armed robberies occurring.
  3. Odometer?
  4. Could try with clear plastic.
  5. That looks to be an urban legend, they had some of the strongest animal cruelty laws.
  6. I read one article talking about them being able to pick up dna from the environment. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2012/11/bdelloids-surviving-borrowed-dna Something similar: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2016/05/03/these-lady-salamanders-are-better-off-without-men/ I just find the various strategies interesting.
  7. They don't. Light never stops or goes backwards, it only has further to go. Imagine you are driving down the road and a construction crew adds another 100 km to the road between you and your destination. You don't stop, you don't reverse, but the distance to your destination has increased.
  8. All I'm going to say is that I'm taking no chances on them messing things up any worse. Everything but the population growth is typical historically. Diasporas, land development program that goes back to Roman times, random attacks by one group of marauders or another. I suspect economics will eventually check population growth. Most of the ecological problems are going to leave the world changed, but most probably won't notice the difference after a generation or two. For better or worse, we are a species with short memories. By and large as long we can continue to provide the necessities, beef up infrastructure and building codes, we should be able to weather what is to come for at least a few hundred years. New technology out and coming out that improves self sufficiency will also play a role. Supply chains tend to be the weak links in our armor.
  9. You asked for a personal opinion. Personally I would do neither. Economic costs for both executions and life imprisonment. In real terms, people can die while waiting for execution and people sentenced to life can end up walking free. In some cases, comparing the US and UK, we have prisoners voluntarily waiving their appeals being executed(US) and people imprisoned for life(UK) being refused the chance to commit suicide. I don't feel either option is especially clear cut from an ethical standpoint. Number-wise I think we(US) are moving away from executions again. We'll see what happens.
  10. Personally I support surgical options, rather than anything traditional. Think it is important to consider that "life in prison" may not literally mean that, in some cases less than a decade. Makes it less of a certainty that a life sentence will protect society and ensure no one innocent dies in the process.
  11. What about the cases where their "life sentence" is reduced and they end up killing again?
  12. Explosives existed before Nobel. He made them safer to store and handle, which led to wider adoption. No evidence that anyone ever showed up before after a great number of lifeforms ended up going extinct due to specific events. We've got problems but we have considerably more options to deal with them than ever before.
  13. Way too many non-optimal features :/ We need to go ahead and intelligently design ourselves, then people will be happy
  14. Most religions are just a mish mash. I think the more militant atheists out there hope to force others to think critically about their own beliefs.

    Diamond age

Can't be Sci-fi, there's already a book out with that title.
  16. Are those photons thought to eventually decay?
  17. May be my imagination, but they seem to be emphasizing the plural vs singular.
  18. Not enough time has passed.
  19. Horray! Have a full sized computer again. Wish I had thought to buy speakers, but at least I'm no longer typing on that teeny tiny phone screen :)

Went with a couple of basic speakers.

Hoping to move to a VR rig once things normalize for them. Can't wait until we can test/compare the different types ourselves :)

I used to work on a full size computer in the 1970's. It took up two large rooms in the basement of an office block :)

  20. Epithelial cells can be found in urine in normal circumstances. Could be purely mechanical seperation going on.
  21. Searches 'constant vs invariant' finds thread on another forum started by Studiot... :)

  22. I suspect material differences. Crystallization makes the plastic more opaque, rigid and useful in higher temperature applications. Black plastic polishes out there for autos. Looks to be along the same lines of Dimreepr's suggestion though.
  23. Are you working with CPET?
  24. May have been setting himself up as a common enemy. Instructors can do that reasonabley safely. See Full Metal Jacket for a counter example... May have been for pure shits and giggles though. I think they did something like that for a case of recruits sending mail to each other, but besides extra duties, the couple were otherwise let off. Actually had cell phone priveleges last time around. Ran out of stuff to talk about. Definitely no need for letter writing :¥
  25. Bodies and a sledge. Most was locally queried material. Didn't have to go all that far. We know they had some access to wood(mortar, boats) so may have also used construction methods that would be more familiar to us. At one point wheeled baskets for the stones came out, but not sure on when they were first invented though. The really big stuff they simply floated most of the way to the construction site. Biography of Ineni, has a line about it.
