jessehk Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Hello, I am 11 years old but love science. I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a course or book I can read that teaches chemistry. I already have the basics of the periodic table down but that is about it. In the end, I would like to learn about synthesis.
Sriman Dutta Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Firstly, study the school course nicely. Secondly, learn the different ways how compounds react before attempting to learn synthesis reaction. 1
studiot Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 (edited) Hello, jesse. Sriman is right you need a wider range of scinece than just chemistry at your age. How about the book of experiments? You may be able to get a second hand copy https://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Experiments-Leonard-Vries/dp/0719503124 There were actually three in the series. You can download the first two here for free. http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvindgupta/bookofexpts.pdf http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvindgupta/bookofexpts.pdf Edited November 12, 2016 by studiot
dimreepr Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 (edited) Just to add; before you attempt the next lesson, be sure you understood the last. Edited November 12, 2016 by dimreepr
John Cuthber Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Just to add; before you attempt the next lesson, be sure you understood the last. I'm in two minds about that. Sometimes it's when you learn the next thing, or the one after that, that the first lesson really makes sense.

Never the less, not understanding lesson one reduces the chance of real/true understanding. I admit, understanding takes more than one lesson, but we all need to build the pyramid if we want to extend our knowledge. Edited November 12, 2016 by dimreepr
Ophiolite Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Have you tried looking at online courses? The Khan Academy has a sound reputation: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry 1

I have watched all khan academy videos on physics and liked that, I am also learning engineering and computer sciences. Chemistry (and nano tech but I don't have the equipment for that) are the 2 fields that I like the most. Aerospace engineering would also be fun. As for biology, and geology, I can tollorate them but I do not love them. Firstly, study the school course nicely. Secondly, learn the different ways how compounds react before attempting to learn synthesis reaction. Sorry, I meant to say I would like to work my way up to synthesis.
