fidlersgrn Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 PAREIDOLA describes the phenomena of objects that look like other objects, I.e. the man in the moon, rock formations, clouds etc. We know these are naturally occurring phenomena and few people take them serious, but there are some living plants that have astonishing similarity to other living objects; A swaddled baby, (Impatiens Bequaert), and Flying ducks, (Orchid Caleana Major), and many others. We know that natural rock and cloud formations are beyond manipulation. We also know that humans at the present time are not capable of genetic alteration of plant life to the extent of the plants referred to here. Is it possible that that these plants are genetically designed to look other objects? If so, since mankind is unable to do this, who did it? It is my contention that there are beings in the universe with the intelligence to do this and are still doing, not only on Earth but through out the universe in general. To me these plants are a conformation of this.
Klaynos Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Is it possible? Yes. Is there any evidence that it's the case? No. And that's the nub of the discussion. If there's no actual evidence then the discussion will not be very fruitful just lots of unsupported speculations. There are millions upon millions of shapes made by plants and millions upon millions of shapes of other stuff, humans are good pattern recognition machines we shouldn't be surprised that there is some overlap. I'd suggest moving onto something with evidence.

To me these plants are a conformation of this. Plants that mimic things have evolved that way because it increased their reproduction potential; no super-intelligent beings required. Characteristics occur by mutation and if that mutation is beneficial to enhancing reproductive success it will likely persist into ensuing generations if nothing else mutes it. Phi for All Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 It is my contention that there are beings in the universe with the intelligence to do this and are still doing, not only on Earth but through out the universe in general. To me these plants are a conformation of this. That's introducing some major non-evidenced forces at work to explain something we can much more easily attribute to the huge diversity of plant life on Earth and our insane pattern-recognition skills. We can't help comparing things to each other, it's a large part of how we assemble data to form information. You'd need some evidence for these super-intelligent beings. Is it assumed they're smart enough to avoid our observation? That makes them equivalent to god(s), so no evidence possible there. A motive might help you piece together a valid argument. What does making these plants look like familiar things accomplish? Does it make us spare the plants so they can thrive? If so, then evolution is a much simpler explanation than super intelligent aliens. Does it make us eat the plants, or use them more specifically? That might be a path that could yield some supportive evidence. But I hope you'll see that the observations you've made support your concept, but don't confirm it. They aren't a confirmation of anything. 1

There was once a field of "medicine" where the treatment was derived from a plant that looked like the ailment or the part of body effected. It wasn't very successful.
Delta1212 Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 There was once a field of "medicine" where the treatment was derived from a plant that looked like the ailment or the part of body effected. It wasn't very successful. Of course not. Taking medicines made out of plants that look like human body parts enhances the attributes of those body parts. If the part in question is afflicted by a disease, it'll just make you sicker to enhance the diseased part. That's healthiness 101.

I think you may have found a humor singularity, because the jokes this creates approach infinity. Viagra is made from redwood trees, right? 1
StringJunky Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I think you may have found a humor singularity, because the jokes this creates approach infinity. Viagra is made from redwood trees, right? But what if it's made from a bonsai redwood?
Phi for All Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 But what if it's made from a bonsai redwood? That would make it a little harder, I suppose.
StringJunky Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 That would make it a little harder, I suppose. Bigger v harder... hmmm
Phi for All Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Bigger v harder... hmmm Same response for grapefruit and breasts.
fidlersgrn Posted December 2, 2016 Author Posted December 2, 2016 (edited) Hey this is fun. I appreciate the input from each of you. The comments from PHI FOR ALL, were very helpful; "Diversity of plant life", "aliens smart enough to avoid our observations", "Motive", all good. KLAYNOS' suggestion to "move on to something with more evidence" I don't intend to do. I appreciate his comment but think he would be more at home in the Applied Science forum. I like to let my mind wander into areas of the "absurd to go there" and "that's ridicules". I am a technician and not trained in the sciences, and appreciate the views of those of you trained in these disciplines. I'm glad to participate in the Trash Heap.....sorry, Trash Bin. Your thread is not in the Trash; that is a subforum within speculations. If it was there we wouldn't be answering.
fidlersgrn Posted December 2, 2016 Author Posted December 2, 2016 Thanks StringJunky for setting me straight on this.
