Douglas Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 An interesting report from NOAA concerning a severe geomagnetic caused by a solar flare on Friday. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2005/s2437.htm Has anyone experienced any of the possible problems described in the article ?
RedAlert Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Nope. Most of the problems seem to be affecting spacecraft and satellites. I doubt anyone here is a NASA scientist. I guess they would be the ones most affected.
YT2095 Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I was on the 11 metre band yesterday (specificly 27.555mhz USB) and the DX contact and propagation was great, no abnormalities there at all, not even QRM, from 10am until 5pm GMT.
Douglas Posted May 16, 2005 Author Posted May 16, 2005 "This event registered a 9 on the K-Index, which measures the maximum deviation of the Earth's magnetic field in a given three-hour period," What effects (if any) would the above statement have on the average persons everyday life ?
Ophiolite Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 He suffers a power outage (but the grid companies are prepared these days). His retirement fund could dip lower because a satellite gets zapped and has to be replaced. His insurance premiums go up for the same reason. In short, no discernible effects other than the potential power loss.
Douglas Posted May 16, 2005 Author Posted May 16, 2005 Is it possible that the retirement fund could go up and the insurance premiums go down?....Or is this a violation of the fundamental laws of "royal screwings" ?
Ophiolite Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Well, its a possibility. Perhaps I could interest you in a bridge I have for sale? Nice location.
Edward Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 Well the power grid here (montreal) went out it does frequently and Hydro Quebec doesen't bother preaparing cause it is too expnsive but their response teams work fast olny took zthem 3 hours to isolate and fix the problems. Power outages are frequent (monthly at highest) but short even in storm conditions.
YT2095 Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 What effects (if any) would the above statement have on the average persons everyday life ? usualy when there`s large amounts of solar activity (esp the 11 cycle type) the radio on 11 metres band swings one of 2 ways, either propogation "skip" is fantastic or it signal 5 of static in waves. needless to say we only like the Skip
Oceansman Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Did anyone see an aurora's caused by this storm? Oh, and guess this is my first post as well
