Nwyld Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 I'm a fish outta water on this site, I can grasp maybe 25% of what's being said so please be gentle. I signed up to to this site because I read an article about quarks and how its impossible to isolate a quark what happens instead is that energy is amassed till two new quarks are created. It's the creation that fascinates me. I don't understand this to me its like creating something from nothing. Can someone explain to me how energy creates new quarks please. thank you for humoring me with what is possibly an irrational question.
swansont Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Quarks are confined with an interaction that gets stronger as they separate, so you have to add increasing amounts of energy as you do this. At some point you will have added more energy than it takes to create a quark/antiquark pair, so that's where the energy goes. Mass is a form of energy (E=mc^2), so as long as other conservation laws are met, other forms of energy can be converted into mass.
