Commander Posted February 8, 2017 Author Posted February 8, 2017 There is a solution. I just didn't want to reveal it. It's just not as straightforward as the title suggests. But I might, seeing how it is unlikely to get solved. What I meant was this is a true STANDARD Mate in two puzzle unlike the other one where the Solution required the ILLEGAL PROMOTION of a Pawn into the Opposite Color Knight which is not a Chess Puzzle at all ! It is HARD though !
Lord Antares Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Fair enough. Am I allowed to post the solution, as it's unlikely anyone will solve it, seeing how all 5 people who play chess have had their go?
studiot Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Fair enough. Am I allowed to post the solution, as it's unlikely anyone will solve it, seeing how all 5 people who play chess have had their go? Put it in a 'spoiler (There is one in the 'special BB code drop down - third icon from the left top row on the input box)
Commander Posted February 8, 2017 Author Posted February 8, 2017 Fair enough. Am I allowed to post the solution, as it's unlikely anyone will solve it, seeing how all 5 people who play chess have had their go? Hi, Please give the Solution if you have personally solved it ! And of course thereafter every move by Black needs to be countered. Either others can shoot the moves and you can give the answers or you can yourself list out all the possibilities. TY
Lord Antares Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 (edited) White moves to mate in two ! I'm quoting the diagram for easier reference. The winning move is the clever Be4! interposing with the rook's view of the f4 square. If either the knight or bishop take on e4, then Bf4# If the rook takes on e4, then Rd5# Anything else, and Bf4# Edited February 8, 2017 by Lord Antares 1
DrKrettin Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 The winning move is the clever Be4+! That's neat, but B-e4 is not check, right?
DrKrettin Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 (edited) The winning move is the clever Be4! So what if the reply to B -e4! is K - d6 ? (that was the reason for my asking the obvious not-check) Edited February 8, 2017 by DrKrettin
Commander Posted February 8, 2017 Author Posted February 8, 2017 I'm quoting the diagram for easier reference. The winning move is the clever Be4! interposing with the rook's view of the f4 square. If either the knight or bishop take on e4, then Bf4# If the rook takes on e4, then Rd5# Anything else, and Bf4# Hi, After B e4 if Black replies : k x B what is the counter k d6 what is the counter e7 e6 what is the counter b d6 what is the counter r d6 what is the counter r d7 what is the counter n g4 what is the counter These will be needed to analyze the Completeness of the answer ! Congratulations and well done though as you got the Solution ! +1 for you 2
Lord Antares Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 So what if the reply to B -e4! is K - d6 ? Then just Qxe7# 1) k x B what is the counter 2) k d6 what is the counter 3) e7 e6 what is the counter 4) b d6 what is the counter 5) r d6 what is the counter 6) r d7 what is the counter 7) n g4 what is the counter Ok I will answer all of these: 1) Re3# 2) Qxe7# 3) Qf4# 4) Qf5# 5) Qf5# 6) Qf5# (for some reason, I spent a lot of time on this one because I thought the king could go to d6, but he clearly can't) 7) Qxe7# That's why no one solved it. Too many variations. I have to admit, I didn't consider all of them but it's still correct 3
J.C.MacSwell Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Well done LA and excellent puzzle Commander! 1
Commander Posted February 9, 2017 Author Posted February 9, 2017 Well done LA and excellent puzzle Commander! TY, and Thx everyone who participated and studiot in particular for the initial thrust of interest ! Then just Qxe7# Ok I will answer all of these: 1) Re3# 2) Qxe7# 3) Qf4# 4) Qf5# 5) Qf5# 6) Qf5# (for some reason, I spent a lot of time on this one because I thought the king could go to d6, but he clearly can't) 7) Qxe7# That's why no one solved it. Too many variations. I have to admit, I didn't consider all of them but it's still correct Well done once again and that is why I immediately declared it as the Solution bcoz it was the solution and only one !
DrKrettin Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Yes, an excellent puzzle. If you call that straightforward, I can't wait for a difficult one. 1
Commander Posted February 9, 2017 Author Posted February 9, 2017 Yes, an excellent puzzle. If you call that straightforward, I can't wait for a difficult one. Thank you very much. And thank you everyone who gave me a +1 Wg Cdr Thomas Walker
Lord Antares Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I'm looking forward to more puzzles from you. Maybe we can post them in the chess thread (http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/102312-the-chess-thread/) so as not to annyo everyone with constant new threads. Because I'd like to post some new ones as well.

Lord Antares Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 (edited) Yes, that's what I meant. A puzzle stands until it has been solved and a new one posted. Edited February 9, 2017 by Lord Antares

It is HARD though ! Yeah!! That puzzle you mentioned was ridiculous
