blackout Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 so, I know that sodium methoxide can be prepared by reacting sodium metal, hydride, amide or hydroxide. what about Na2CO3?
budullewraagh Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 you could probably reduce it with LAH at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere.
akcapr Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 what is sodium methoxide, besides the formula NaCH3O? its characteristics and usues, etc
Hephaestus Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Blackout try making your Q a little clearer. Sodium methoxide is just made by reacting sodium metal or hydroxide with methanol. It is a strong, corrosive base used to make many esters. It's use is important in the formation of biodiesel where you do not want to turn fats into soaps (ie with hydroxide). c.f. http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_aleksnew.html for an example. It is also the most commonly used base in pharmaceutical, food, feed and chemical industries.
