muskan Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I was reading how methane is extracted from methanol. I came across two reactions. Please complete them for me. a) CH3OH + ZnCl2 + HCl -----------> b) CH3Cl + LiAlH4 -----------------> I don' t know how to complete such reactions. Please help.
muskan Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 Absolutely no. We don't get such homeworks in class 9.
hypervalent_iodine Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Then what is it for? General curiosity? The first reaction is what makes chloroform. The ZnCl2 acts as a catalyst for the Cl- (from HCl) to substitute for the OH. This is then reacted with LiAlH4, which is a source of H- to give methane. 1
muskan Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 yes, you are right just for general knowledge. thanks for help 1

Funny looking chloroform with just one chlorine.
