blixty Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 If you didn't know already Yellowstone is a huge super volcano and if it explodes it could send the earth into another ice-age! But how??? Yellowstone will release A LOT of very harmful gasses. And why is this a problem? This is bad because the gasses are enough to block the sun and will turn the earth significantly colder and therefore an ice-age will occur SOLUTION: (We need to find out a way to "suck up" all the harmful gasses). I thought of an idea to make a HUGE VACCUM CLEANER type contraption but higher in the sky and on a very large scale ( >1km x 1km) and place these around the "borders of destruction" note: >1,000 OF THESE WILL HAVE TO BE MADE TO FULL FILL THEIR JOB ONLY IN THE USA (this may differ on the size)
DrKrettin Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Yet one more issue that it is pointless worrying about.
blixty Posted March 23, 2017 Author Posted March 23, 2017 (We might also need these in Europe too) so Europeans won't be feeling the cold either Yet one more issue that it is pointless worrying about. apart from the fact the human race could possibly get wiped out from yellow stone, then yeah bro
DrKrettin Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Yes, but I live on what is technically an active volcano (Tenerife) so I'm relatively chilled out about Yellowstone. There are only so many things you can worry about.

Prometheus Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 If there's nothing you can do then it's not worth worrying about. Global warming and perhaps an asteroid impact are worth worrying about, but i don't think there's much we can do for a super volcano.
Strange Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 I thought of an idea to make a HUGE VACCUM CLEANER type contraption but higher in the sky and on a very large scale ( >1km x 1km) and place these around the "borders of destruction" note: >1,000 OF THESE WILL HAVE TO BE MADE TO FULL FILL THEIR JOB ONLY IN THE USA (this may differ on the size) How much would this cost and how long would it take to make these? Or, in other words, is this even vaguely practical?
EdEarl Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Toba erupted about 75 K years, which is the largest volcanic eruption in the past 25 M years, including the largest Yellowstone eruption. Humanity survived Toba, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory We survived Toba, and we should survive Yellowstone, but not without many deaths.
Phi for All Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Here's a good current study put out by the European Science Foundation. I believe Yellowstone is only mentioned twice, and all the popsci fearmongering is absent.
Lord Antares Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 (edited) Do you not realize how ridiculously large your machine would have to be? And where exactly would it contain all those gasses? Do you realize that it would need to contain an the amount of gass that would cover an entire continent, possibly more? Not only that, but it would need to be incredibly powerful to do this. Do you not know how powerful volcanoes are? Do you know at which speed and force they expel all the harmful fumes? Your machines couldn't suck it in or contain the gasses. All in all, it's impossible to build, unimaginably expensive and pointless. Edited March 23, 2017 by Lord Antares
Raider5678 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 How much would this cost and how long would it take to make these? Or, in other words, is this even vaguely practical? 1k * 1k. These are huge, sucking in a massive amount of gas(as well as plain old normal air.) 1 thousand square kilometers of sucking power. That's a lot of gas storage. So no, not possible.
Acme Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 It's not the gasses that block the Sun, rather it is the ash/dust thrown high into the atmosphere. The big sucker will require big storage and possibly a bagless/filterless sucking design such as those Dyson® vortex sweepers to prevent clogging.
