Sarahisme Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 hey i am writing up my prac on the preparation of aspirin, and just can't seem to find any information on what the "published" or "accepted" yield is. In my experimetn i got 86% (which i think is a little high). Cheers Sarah
Sarahisme Posted May 28, 2005 Author Posted May 28, 2005 oh yeah, i meant to ask... where can i find this kind of information? (or this specific piece of information?)
Sarahisme Posted May 28, 2005 Author Posted May 28, 2005 oh and likewise for paracetamol (if anyone knows where this kind of info. exists ) ?
BenSon Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 I'm not familiar with the preparation of aspirin. If it dosn't involve equilibriums and similar, your best bet is just to calculate the theoretical possible yield and compare yours to it. ~Scott
Sarahisme Posted May 29, 2005 Author Posted May 29, 2005 yeah i have done that, but i was thinking that there would be a value for the yield that is got when it is done in industry or something like that...? thanks for replying btw
BenSon Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 Maybe try emailing the companies, they could possibly help. I have no idea what the industry standard is. ~Scott
Skye Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 If you have access look up journals online, eg. journal of the american chemical society.
budullewraagh Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 out of curiosity, what precursor did you use, and what did you do to obtain your final product?
budullewraagh Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 what was the base chemical you started with in your synthesis?
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 for aspirin it was salicylic acid and for paracetamol 4-aminophenol
budullewraagh Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 so basically you esterfied the salicylic acid with ethanoic acid and you formed the amide of para-aminophenol with ethanoic acid. what catalysts did you use?
Sarahisme Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 ok yeah ,well 85% and 60% is good i suppose, so thanks yep thanks everyone
Crash Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Lol, we did this lab at teh start of this semester for my organic chem class (aspirin not paracetamol)
