Itoero Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Are there people inhere that 'play' with Lego? I do. In the last months I have built several lego technic's and now I'm rebuilding a truck (42029)...I'm making my first remote controlled car.

So yes, one of my favorites.
StringJunky Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 (edited) I've built a few legos for my nephew who was being bought sets like that one you mentioned at about 3-4 years old by Mummy and Daddy and, of course, Uncle had to spend all hours building them. It's impressive the detail in some of them though. Some of these sets were 100 quid each. Edited April 10, 2017 by StringJunky
Sensei Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Are there people inhere that 'play' with Lego? Lego Technic should be the most favorite toy of the world. But price disallows. Itoero Posted April 10, 2017 Author Posted April 10, 2017 Lego Technic should be the most favorite toy of the world. But price disallows. Looks like a lot of fun.. That's the one I'm rebuilding! I'm often amazed of the detail that goes in the design. The Porsche looks amazing but that's to expensive imo.
Sensei Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 (edited) This Porsche looks to me very sophisticated. Elements can be used just once in the one right place. The whole LEGO technic, true one, must be universal. Once you build device from the box, other time, completely different device, so elements must be universal, or will be useless for other projects. Where is Meccano? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meccano James May in Toy Stories, built Meccano bike, and Meccano bridge: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=james+may+meccano+motorbike+full+episode https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=james+may+meccano+bridge For kid, engineer-to-be (robotics etc), metal Meccano with electric motor engines, means being in heaven. The next essential step will be Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and sending orders to device by wire/wifi from laptop/desktop/through internet.. Edited April 11, 2017 by Sensei
Klaynos Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I would love to be able to justify Lego. But i just can't. I did build a mecanno proof of concept for a rover I'm going to build. I'd like to do it with something like mecanno, makerblock, or Lego but the price is too high. I think I'll end up hand machining all of the parts. First from perspex and in the future maybe alluminium.

Now everybody with idea of device, and having more than 500 usd+ can simply make thing using 3D printer (now everybody should have 3D printer or ready access to it!) Lego/Meccano has to learn KIDS how devices are made. So they can see and learn internals. Edited April 11, 2017 by Sensei
Phi for All Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I would love to be able to justify Lego. But i just can't. When you build your custom home, you could use refurbished 9' x 9' x 40' steel shipping containers and a crane, like giant Legos. Nobody would accuse you of playing with toys.

Elements are universal. That's the fun thing. Many people build scale models (own design) with bought parts or bought lego sets. I've never build meccano. Lego is in plastic, that makes it more user friendly I think. And lego is very diverse. You have Lego Technic, city, train, creator, architecture... There are people that build huge cities from Lego. I also built the Eiffel tower in lego It's amazing what they can build.
Sensei Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 (edited) 21st century "Meccano"-on-steroids-version (aka build your own iPhone in China) Quite hilarious. Edited April 14, 2017 by Sensei
Itoero Posted August 3, 2017 Author Posted August 3, 2017 There is an unofficial Stephen Hawking lego kit He was a recurring guest star in 'The Big Bang Theory'...they often made jokes about him and even made a remote controlled Stephen Hawking-toy. So I'm pretty sure Hawking likes this lego kit and does not find it offensive.
