Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 hey , i can't see why this is called 2-Methylethyl or why it is then called ISOPROPYl if someone has the time, could the please explain this too me ? Thanks Sarah
BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 That disgram confuses me I'm not familiar with that style. is it something like this (add H's) C | C-C Its ethane with an mthyl and also an isomer of propane. What i don't get is the 2 in '2-Methylethyl' does it realy need to be there, I think theres only one position for the methyl and if there was two methyls wouldn't it be dimethylethyl? ~Scott
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 yeah i was thinking something like that, but i am 90% sure what i've got is correct....i just don't know why...... :S

The correct structure is CH3-CH-CH~~~~ | CH3 so if u look at it;it's pretty simple. Count the no of C atoms and number it from the chain end locating the longest chain of C atoms. You'll see that it has 1C atom at the 2nd position as a substituent. So the name will be 2-methylpropyl(IUPAC) or isopropyl(common name) The isopropyl gp is : CH3-CH- | CH3 Hence the name.
scientistsahai Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Well the structure is'nt coming as it shud so i'll redraw it CH3 | CH - | CH3 ISOPROPYL GP.
BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I follow you but it was originally named 2-methylethyl not propyl whats the difference structualy. ~Scott
BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Yeah thats quite a statement , so no avatar for you Sarah? ~Soct
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 her breasts could be considered weapons in some countries....
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 Well the structure is'nt coming as it shudso i'll redraw it CH3 | CH - | CH3 ISOPROPYL GP. i see where the "prop" bit is coming from, but do not see where the methyl or "yl" bit is? does "yl" imnply that there is a triple bond somewhere?
BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I can't find a triple bond here. What i got so far the Isopropyl group is attached to something else on the 2nd carbon in the chain hence the "2". A methyl group it just a CH3 group attacked to a chain and a ethyl group is a CH3CH2 group on a chain. If we add these groups togeher we get, hence methylethyl. CH3 | CH2 | CH3 Here the methyl group is in bold and the ethyl group in italics. Remove a H from the centre carbon (No 2) And it becomes 2-methylethyl. CH3 | CH-R | CH3 ~Scott
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 its weird kind of naming then isnt it? i mean its almost a completely different method than how it is normally done.... or at least it seems that way to me
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 cough *fake* cough ~Scott do guys actually like those kind of breasts? :S
BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 its weird kind of naming then isnt it? i mean its almost a completely different method than how it is normally done.... or at least it seems that way to me Yeah it seems strange to me too but thats the best I can come up with. I find it strange how its name would go into other compounds. example CH3 | CH-OH | CH3 I guess this would be like 2-isopropyl alcohol but couldn't it be called 2-Propanol? Seems like a easyer name to me ~Scott
BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 do guys actually like those kind of breasts? :S They look waaaaaay to fake to me but I'm sure others would prefer them... ~Scott

BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 yeah i agreeWell we started out all wrong, but I think we've got it now . yeah my boyfriend is into some pornstar called briana banks or something, hang on i'll just check.....yep her,..... dunno apparently she has such large things aswell.... i don't quite understand but anywho Haven't heard of her, but to each his own I guess...Can't say I'm opposed to large ones. It's just when they are totally fake its not a good thing. ~Scott
Sarahisme Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 i that comment isnt too inappropraite for these forums :S

BenSon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Dosen't matter, I wouldn't be surprised if this discussion is quickly sweeped under the rug by the mods ~Scott
