Whats the hotmails mail server called?

Whats the hotmails mail server called? is it mail.hotmail.com or hotmail.com? I am setting up thunderbird for my hotmail account, and its pop3 not IMAP isnt it?

As far as I'm aware, you can only get the POP3/IMAP service if you subscribe; they don't let people do it anymore because of abuse issues.

Well as mail.hotmail.com brings up nothing and hotmail.com brings up the hotmail login I'd say it's hotmail.com

 

If it were pop3 then emails are 'popped' from the server to your computer, whereas with IMAP your email program (or client) is constantly connected to the email server and doesn't actually make copies of the emails on your computer.

 

IMAP emails are stored on a server, whereas pop3 is download straight to your machine.

 

So I would assume hotmail is be default IMAP, however using your client you may wish to download them in which case you'd use pop3... the best advice really is just try it, nothing will happen if you get it wrong, litterally nothing!!! And it's normally quite easy to changed the IMAP/pop3 option.

 

[edit] actually, dave's post just triggered a thingy in my mind, hotmail is an HTTP email thingy, not pop3 or IMAP, my mistake. It's HTTP.

To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/ .

Hotmail, the offline non-webbrowser version uses a protocol called HTTPMail. Although it has been around for many many years, Microsoft still considers it a trial product and apparently they have not documented the protocol, so up to date, I only know of Hotmail and MSN that use it (if anybody knows of another mail service that provides this). HTTPMail is built on WebDAV (http://www.webdav.org) as an extension to HTTP/1.1.

 

I doubt that any non-Microsoft product would have extensive support for this protocol as it is still a "beta" product. However, as far as I know, there are still currently a few independent "projects" on HTTPMail, and you can learn more here (they seem to be non-ASP however): http://httpmail.sourceforge.net/

My friend set Outlook Express to get from hotmail (HTTP) and yahoo! (pop3) and gmail (pop3) and it all works, he clicks "receive" and gets from all 3 accounts at once, all working.

OE will do it because it's an MS product. I suspect the reason that they haven't documented the HTTPMail protocol is that they don't want people to use products other than their own to download mail from their Hotmail accounts.

What do you mean by new hotmail accounts? I don't use hotmail, but when you say new to mean just any created since a certain date? Or are they implementing a new system or what?
