tkadm30 Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I'm sick of people using internet forums to bash on homosexuality as a way to demonstrate their lower mind density. Homophobia is totally unacceptable and unscientific. There's no reason to tolerate this behavior. I hope this helps. 2
Phi for All Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Please report any posts you feel aren't focused on the science. Expressing prejudiced opinions about any group is against our rules. 2
DrP Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I tend to agree. Isn't often said that those that are the most aggressively homophobic are actually more likely to be repressed homosexuals themselves? I think it is learnt behaviour from an age not so long past. It has only been legal for a few decades in the UK and is still illegal in many places. Most homophobes I meet that want to talk about how disgusting gay marriage is and the like tend to have fathers that have been aggressively homophobic and have threatened their kids to never be gay. (mass generalization I know - but not uncommon). 1
Phi for All Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Most homophobes I meet... Please avoid making them a group, and focus on the behavior. 1
NimrodTheGoat Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 There will always be homophobic people, some of them will stay quite, but there will be others who will speak their voice. There certainly shouldn't be any of that kind of talk here on these forums.
swansont Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 We don't tolerate it here. That's one thing you don't get in unmoderated forums.

Homophobia is totally unacceptable and unscientific. There's no reason to tolerate this behavior. I hope this helps. On the contrary, homophobia is very scientific. In psychology we have studied and mostly discerned the various cognitive dissonance and defense mechanisms of the mind that often afflict folks. A phobia is, after all, an irrational fear, and so phobias are also an area of psychological study. Thus, scientific. I can delve into the most common psychological dynamics that are at work in people who are homophobic if you like, but I have a feeling you aren't really interested.
CharonY Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 The fact that the study of a certain condition or position is scientific does not render the position scientific itself (whatever the relevance of it may be). 1

The study of homophobia and how internet is contributing to the emergence of this disorder is significant.
DrKrettin Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 On the contrary, homophobia is very scientific. How the hell can an emotion be scientific?

By that reasoning you may as well call astrology and homeopathy "scientific". Or in other words, why subvert a thread by trying to redefine the topic?

I don't think Velocity_Boy hijacked the thread: The study of homophobia as a psychiatric disease (irrational fear of homosexuality) is interesting.
Phi for All Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I don't think Velocity_Boy hijacked the thread: The study of homophobia as a psychiatric disease (irrational fear of homosexuality) is interesting. I thought the thread was about homophobic, non-scientific ranting. Phobias and other conditions can be analyzed scientifically, but the posts you originally objected to weren't like that. They were merely slurs against groups of people.
tkadm30 Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 (edited) Cyberhomophobia (homophobic bullying) is completely new to me. I was perhaps imprecise in my OP. However, I do advocate for raising awareness about this condition, as Velocity_Boy pointed out. Anyways, in no way I find this behavior acceptable on a science forum. Edited April 27, 2017 by tkadm30
