Ben88012 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 can wood or coal be used as the solid in a Hybrid rocket if it cant does anyone have any uncommon ideas
KipIngram Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 If you look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-propellant_rocket#Propellant_families you'll see that the first entry (black powder propellants) has charcoal as a component. What you're looking for is a material blend that has a high "specific impulse." Not just the material itself but also the grain geometry is important.

What he's looking for is probably a hybrid rocket system - because that's what he asks about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid-propellant_rocket That rules out black powder (and I think it rules out all the other systems you linked to). I can't think of a good reason why timber of coal wouldn't work. I'd be a bit worried about the solid cracking under the pressure and breaking up.
KipIngram Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Oh, you're right - I misread. I took it as a query about solid rocket fuels. Sorry about that.
