Wiggle Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 How much does a fish weigh if it weighs 1 pound plus half its own weight?
reverse Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 so... that's what algebra was designed to do. still a cruel thing to put school children through.
AzurePhoenix Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 requiring such math classes is cruel and unusual, but as long as we're not being punished proper, so much as being pointlessly tormented, it's not unconstitutional. Therefore, In the US, we must suffer through four years of evil fishy riddles
Callipygous Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 they dont keep going with the fish, eventually they have you do really important things, like finding the surface area and volume of a donut...
AzurePhoenix Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Don't forget the density of Great Aunt Claire after two infusions of blood and a liposuction
why? Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 ok mayb this is the answer, but u said it wieghs 1 pound so it weighs one pound forget the math look outside the horizon thats mayb
Draco Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 For goodness sake here. Look the fish weighs 1lb plus half it's weight ( 1lb ) half of 1lb is 8 oz( 0.5lb)...right so it weighs 1.5lb yeh? If it weighs what it weighs plus half of that then it weighs 1.5lb to the answer ga ga
AzurePhoenix Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 He must be, because I'm a total math idiot, and even I know that that's nowhere near to true.
Tommio Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 If you reword the question it would work out at 2/3 Ib as 2/3 + 1/3 = 1 IB
Callipygous Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 If you reword the question it would work out at 2/3 Ib as 2/3 + 1/3 = 1 IB interesting... if you change the question it has a different answer?
Tommio Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 Yeah - bit of an exam tip there. What is the answer then?
Tommio Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 I'm going to have to ask for some working, coz this is really going to annoy me
Phi for All Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 It's a good thing this wasn't posted in the Maths forums. Dave would ban you all. Callipygous is right.
Tommio Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 I got 2 working backwards with algerbra, but it still doesn't make sense. But i don't care anymore. NEXT>
jdurg Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 How much does a fish weigh if it weighs 1 pound plus half its own weight? It's easy. The fish weighs 'one pound plus half it's own weight'. So it weighs half its own weight plus one pound. So its weight (x) = 1 + 0.5x x - 0.5x = 1 0.5x = 1 x = 1/0.5 x = 2 = fish's weight.
Kornkid Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 ohh, i do enjoy a good algebraic problem to begin my day!
SubJunk Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 if this could even be called a problem by anyone who has been to their first algebra lesson at school
Wiggle Posted June 13, 2005 Author Posted June 13, 2005 I'm sorry for taking so long to get back on this, but yes the answer is 2.
Trond Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 How much does a fish weigh if it weighs 1 pound plus half its own weight? It says it weighs 1, and then it says + half of that weigh. 1 + 0,5 = 1,5
Callipygous Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 It says it weighs 1' date=' and then it says + half of that weigh. 1 + 0,5 = 1,5[/quote'] um.... try again?
why? Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 I got it after like 3 readings.. Questions like those make me feel stupid. Oh.. and will respond after asking my math teacher this question.. lets see if she gets it??
Trond Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 um.... try again? Then it is a language problem, not a mathematical one.
