would it be possible to make a real working lightsaber? i think maybe plasma could be manipulated by a magnetic field for the beam.

while eventually we may be able to find a way to project SOMETHING in an arc like that it wont be something that will hold its shape and cut through anything except another lightsaber.

A much better possibility would be modifying a sword to have a "powersword" (I 'borrowed' that term from games workshop) that you can turn on/off but that permanantly has a blade. But it still wouldn't be anything like a lightsaber.

 

And don't even ask about it deflecting bullets.

The idea that you could have a device that could redirect photons of light, if that is what a lightsaber is, fit in your hand is pretty far out there. And as far as i'm aware of few photons can't slice through metal.
