Maybe it was a misquote, but one of the scientists rates the explosive power of a GRB as just below the Big Bang.

Which of course, was not an explosion.
( no wonder we have so many misconceptions )

She actually was quoted as saying "just behind" with regard to ranking, which is better...though not by much for reasons you stated.
