This poll is a little America-centric... but for all you foreigners:

If you commented that you were against the right to bear arms, do not vote republican or libertarian.

If you believed Saddam had WMD, but were still against the war, you should vote green or democrat.

If you're for abortion but against the death penality, democrat is the way to go.

.. see http://www.politics1.com/parties.htm

The other parties are self-evident :P

and there is no "none" option, because if you think you're not in line with most of the beliefs of a party, you probably haven't seen the site I linked to. Try to pick the closest match, and if you're really out there choose 'Other'.

You can't stick someone in a political pigeon hole just because they have a certain opinion about a single subject.

This poll is ridiculous, as is the idea that somebody can not be apolitical.

Posted

More often than not, a majority of peoples views coincide with a particular political party. This poll is completely valid.

As far as the guidelines I gave, the majority would not deviate.

Posted

But you see, this is where it all falls over.

"People's views" is not the same as "people's opinions on Saddam having WMD" or any of the other examples you used. It's like comparing the syllabus for a semester with a single lesson plan and saying they amount to the same course.

Do you see where I'm coming from?

Posted

Yes, however where you're coming from is invalid.

If the syllabus says a lesson plan is "Synaptotagmins and their role in exocytosis", the course is not in the politcal science department.

However, from that lesson plan you can say the course is a molecular biology course, and it's not going to be too far off from that.

This poll is about closest match, not exact fit.

Politcal position is a continuum, and the point of this poll is to see who leans towards the left or right, or is centered, and the guidelines I posted for those not familiar with our party system are true for a MAJORITY. A higher percentage of democrats were against the war, and a higher percentage of democrats support abortion, and a higher percentage of democrats are against the death penalty. These are FACTS; the entire point of politcal parties is to organize a group of people who feel the same way about a variety of issues, and the groups that exist today exist because a great number of people support their platform.

Every survey ever conducted on the subject? Look at media polls, and look at the votes on bills in the House and Senate.

Posted

I follow politics, and I've taken a politcal science course.

The entire point of political parties is for a group of people to get together who agree on alot of things.

Posted

Hmmm. I'm worried you might be confusing agenda with purpose. However, you're clearly smart enough to know the difference so you get the benefit of the doubt.

What's the aim of the poll anyway?

Posted

As I said before, the poll is to get a breakdown of whether members are on the left side of the continuum, or right side, or center. Among the real scientific community, people are more to the right.

You have to ask yourself, what does this say about cause and effect?

And does scienceforums.net have a user base that breaks down in the same way as the general population?

For example, I put down socialist because there was no 'rhineland capitalism' (the recognised label closest to my views that i know of) option. But socialist to an american might mean something different to what it means to a european - in fact, to an american, my views probably coincide more closely with 'liberalism.'

Among the UK scientific community people are more to the left afaik, certainly among the academics.

I didn't check out your website, because i'm just lazy. But see where I'm at. I despise world peace, think George Bush is a moron, WMD's are cool, don't mind war, despise democracies, and think the only perfect world order would be a fuedalistic monarchy, where instead of strenghth and kin being the factor of where your placement in nobilit was, how smart you are is the main factor. Is there a specific political party that follows those giudlines? If there is, I'm that, unless its Nazi, caue I also hate Hitler.

What a scientific poll!!

Indeed. I see someone has already voted Nazi to try to be cute.

It's like the infamous internet penis size poll, where average penis length was 18 inches, and most people who participated put down "Your Mom" as their location.

Don't be surprised. USA has the most neo-Nazis in the world. Its been statistically proven. So maybe some1 is a Nazi. Nazi is just Fascist with a racism touch, so I'm not surprised hearing there are Nazis. But Nazi as a political party? This is getting ridiculous. Fascism and Nazism both as political parties? Plz don't let that happen again.

Communism is up there. Gee, are ppl scared of a communist or Bolshevik revolution of the world? Better watch out...

Do you truly believe that you can stop us? We dominate the population, you cannot stop the communists.

Soviet union all the way....heh just a bit of fun.

But seriously i didn't label myself as anyone as i don't have anypolitical ambitions. So there!:D
