Ideas for student research project year 10

I really can't think of anything to investigate. I prefer something that doesn't involve plants as a lot can go wrong with plants.

Could you elaborate more on the requirements of your assessment? What other ideas have you considered? I always found the plant based research assignments to be the easiest. The results are normally quite clear if you have the right set up. I think one of the ones I did was investigating the effect of salinity on plant growth and development. We determined a rough concentration of salt in ocean water by evaporating off the water and weighing the residue, and used water with the same NaCl concentration to water the plants. We then had another group watered with distilled water, and one with an amount half way in between. A student I tutored last year did something similar to determine the effect of agricultural and industrial run off by watering plants with water from river sources near industrial plants and farms. Another one I did was looking at the effect of light and glucose on growth, but this was using my school’s plant tissue culture lab. You have lots of options!

Very good ideas hypervalent_iodine.

 

How about algae development in couple containers, each one with different concentration of agricultural wastewater (and test effect of various fertilizers on their growth).

But you didn't tell us in which area of science.. Chemistry? Physics? Biology?

In projects mentioned by hypervalent_iodine, things must go wrong with some plants, as they receive something (e.g. salt) which kills some of them..

 

If you will be doing such long time going project (for days or weeks), place at fixed position camera which will record timelapse, and generate video from separate photos. You will have something to show on YouTube in science section.
