popcornlover Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 I'm trying to write the balanced chemical equation for calcium carbide and water, I know acetylene gas is produced as a product but I'm unsure what the second product of the reaction is. I've seen two chemical equations with different products and I'm not sure which is the right one. CaC2 + H2O --> C2H2 + CaOCaC2 + 2H2O --> C2H2 + Ca(OH)2 Is the second product Calcium Oxide or Calcium Hydroxide?

Anyway, Popcornlover, what do you know about calcium oxide? I know calcium oxide is a white powdery substance, and I just found out that calcium oxide breaks down when it comes in contact with water and turns into calcium hydroxide... That must mean that the second product would be calcium hydroxide, since the reaction involves water as one of the reactants. Lol thanks for the help! Edited April 24, 2018 by popcornlover
