runasyrst Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Hello! I'm trying to extract rose oil with steam distillation, I have added oil, almond oil , water and roses flowers in the flask but at the end not getting rose oil only getting water, and rose flowers and Oil remained in flask, Please suggest me best method and chemicals for rose oil extraction, or mention me if i am missing anything in the procedure, Thanks.
John Cuthber Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 You seem to be missing an understanding of the procedure. Almond oil isn't volatile enough to steam distil. Rose oil is volatile and will distil, but there isn't much of it so, unless you have a lot of roses, you are not going to see the oil- you should be able to smell it. From wiki "It takes a large amount of rose petals to distil a small amount of essential oil. Depending on extraction method and plant species, the typical yield can be approximately 1:3,000" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_oil To get a gram of oil you need about 3 kilos of petals.

From JC's link: Quote The key flavor compounds that contribute to the distinctive scent of rose oil, however, are beta-damascenone, beta-damascone, beta-ionone, and rose oxide. Beta-damascenone presence and quantity is considered as the marker for the quality of rose oil. Even though these compounds exist in less than 1% quantity of rose oil, they make up for slightly more than 90% of the odor content due to their low odor detection thresholds.[3]
runasyrst Posted July 29, 2018 Author Posted July 29, 2018 As you described that Almond oil isn't volatile enough to steam distill. Rose oil is volatile and will distill, Are these oils volatile and will distill or not? WALNUT OIL SOYBEAN OIL SUNFLOWER OIL PEANUT OIL COCONUT OIL GRAPESEED OIL Carrot Oil Aloe Vera Oil Camelina Oil Is there any method to know that which are able to volatile and which are not able to volatile? Thank You.
