Evangelante Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 I'm seeing this a lot more often and it's starting to disturb me because when I notice things like this I start to notice a trend on the web that I'm not aware of and is: 1. Forming 2. Some type of gang code 3. Some type of entry that people use from a certain group (nation, cult, w/e) So I'm wondering why people are putting Cheers At the bottom of their posts. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, I'm just noticing that it's coming around more and more and I don't understand why people are putting Cheers at the bottom of almost every post they have. Why is this happening? Is there some type of trend on the web that's developing?
Sayonara Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 "Cheers" is a UK English expression. It is an informal toast, another word for thank-you, and more recently seems to be used in place of "goodbye". Mystery solved?
coquina Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 My mom was a Brit, and she used to always say, "Cheerio" when she hung up the phone. Cheers is probably derived from that - I have no clue where "cheerio" originated.
Klaynos Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 It's been used as a very informal form of "good bye", and thank you for as long as I can remember. I occationally use it, and very occationally at the bottom of posts.
Phi for All Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Perhaps it is meant to be literal. What the member is posting is so touching and memorable, applause breaks out. They give their speech and leave the stage to tumultuous, spontaneous Cheers!

swansont Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 So I'm wondering why people are putting Cheers At the bottom of their posts. Because the powers that be frown upon putting "screw you" or worse at the bottom of posts. And the "Cheers" gang club can wipe the floor of that "Cheerio" club any day of the week. Cheers!
Ollie Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 I've been saying "cheers" in place of "thanks" towards the end of a post/conversation for a long time now. I believe it comes from toasting somehow.
