True but we imo don't know who won the 10 km. We know that Dan won after running 3 km. We don't know what he exactly won. Maybe Dan won a sprint at 3km.

Dan wins after running during 3 of the 10 kilometers; he could walk faster than the others could run so he walked the remaining 7 km. Bill and Jim run 6 kilometers and tie for third, they decided to walk the rest without competing, they were already far ahead of the last competitor but had no hope of reaching 2nd or 1st place. Which boys run 10 kilometers? Only one boy left: Nick. He could run all the way but had to take lots of breaks. Or run all 10 km without pause but at a too slow pace. In the Tour de France for example you can often win points/time by reaching certain goals in between start and finish as first....that doesn't mean you reached the finish as first.

Heard an interesting theory once(not specifically in line with what the creator said) that mentions it's possible that it really meant that they'd found a much shorter path through the Kessel.
