Itoero Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 Pesticides, pollution and climate change are all wiping out insects at an alarming rate – so much, that a new global review says they could vanish within a century, threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems”. The scientists are calling for an urgent overhaul of the agricultural industry, warning that “unless we change our ways of producing food, insects as a whole will go down the path of extinction in a few decades”.https://www.channel4.com/news/insects-decline-threatens-catastrophic-collapse-of-natures-ecosystems The rate of insect extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles.https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/feb/10/plummeting-insect-numbers-threaten-collapse-of-nature
nymnpseudo Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 I just read that it's a combination of fungicide and pesticide, not either by itself, that is destroying commercial pollinating bees in certain cases. Almond crop in California I think it was.
Sensei Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 (edited) Extinction of insects will cause extinction of birds, reptiles and amphibians as well, as they are serious source of food of higher level animals. Without flying insects many plants will extinct as well unable to exchange their pollen and reproduce. Agricultural skyscrapers can be designed in such a way, that they will work without any pesticides. Hermetic single floor. Much easier for selective decontamination. SmilyHHZ Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 And what about those chemicals which are used to fight such insects as fleas, termites, bed bugs etc? They are so poisonous and also bring a lot of troubles to other insects which don't bring any harm to people. There is a lot of options to fight them without chemicals. And if we use toxins to kill pests then the whole ecosystem is in danger.

I don't think pests would be able to survive. We would need robots to tend to the plants.
