hey i can't decide whether the answer to quesion 39.3 should be the same as 39.2 (b) or ©

 

i gather its © because from the pions view (in the pions inertial reference frame), the time elapsed is 2.6x10^-8 s , and so it would be (.85c)(2.6x10^-8) = 6.6m

Although, what would the effect of time dilation be at 0.85c?

I got the same answer. But I went the long way around. I took the distance travelled in the labs reference frame (12.6m) and factored in length contraction to get the distance travelled (6.6m) in the pions reference frame.

 

I think your point of view is much simpler.
