Justaguy1981
I hope this is where I need to come with my thought experiment. This is my first post. I just signed up. I dont know if this has been asked elsewhere if so I apologize. I am not an intelligent person but I like to think my imagination is still awesome. Ok here is my thought experiment. Please let me know your thoughts and if it is at all plausable. I just read a trilogy of Science Fiction books written by an author, Nick Webb, called the Legacy Trilogy. (Constitution,Warrior, and Victory) In these books the scientists of earth have developed a form of warp drive called a Qjump short for quantum jump. Which allows a ship to jump at maximum a tenth of a light year in an instant. During a space battle they made a jump to a certain area away from the battle I think it was a few minutes of light distance to intercept the enemy and the conversation between the captain and his first officer turned to the question of where are the enemy and why they couldnt detect it from the jumping point and the captain said that the sensors couldnt detect them because the information (which travels at light speed) had not reached them yet before making the jump. This got me to thinking about the real possibilities of warp drive. Some scientists think it can be achievable some do not think this. If warp drive is possible then it would take the ship into the past toward the destination you send the ship relatively speaking. What is keeping us (in the future when warp drive technology is feasible and usable)from jumping to a precise location far in the distance and beam back the information (which only travels at light speed) to precisely reach us in this time period. The knowledge to jumpstart the warp drive capability or knowledge to advance civilization to a degree of greatness. That kind of signal would seem alien I would assume. And can we give instructions to the future generations to beam this info to us so we would have the info?
Endy0816
Yeah, the speed of light and causality are closely interwoven. Warp drive is likely impossible due to this reason.
MigL
In General Relativity 'faster' than light travel, whether by a 'wormhole' or a 'warp' drive enables a phenomenon called Closed Timelike Loops, which are essentially a time machine. One of the more famous physicist to have worked on these phenomena is Kip Thorne. As Endy mentions above, while the theory of GR allows this, there are many problems such as breaking causality and circumventing the 2nd law of Thermodynamics.
