Externet Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Hi. If reasonable efforts to germinate seeds result in nothing, is it commonly due to the seeds being from a hybrid plant ? Should that be the reason ? Seeds with zero origin information : Not germinating when following instructions from expert/successful growers-
StringJunky Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) You could check with one or all of these terms if they need a process called 'pre-chilling', 'stratifying' or 'vernalizing' to break dormancy. The time required varies. Just Google a plant and see if they require it It could mean up to 8 weeks in the fridge. Instructions vary between plants. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernalization Seeds become less viable over time as well, depending on storage conditions Edited March 26, 2020 by StringJunky
Externet Posted March 26, 2020 Author Posted March 26, 2020 Thanks, StringJunky. Stratification, scarification, chilling... understood. Will check. I was reading today the instructions to germinate something else... "Collect the pods in autumn, put in the freezer for so long, then moist them... " Doooh ! assuming too much. What if you collect the pods from the tree in March ! They spent the entire winter doing the stratification the natural way, and no brains to consider such by the 'expert' instructions...

Yes, if they are left through the winter the job should be done... assuming they are still available in the spring. Some seeds need moisture from planting before freezing. Externet Posted March 26, 2020 Author Posted March 26, 2020 Was going to take a picture at the tree outside, but found the same on the web... Blooming starting and seed pods still there... (Cercis canadiensis) 1
