ydoaPs Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 which comes first: the sun dying or andromeda colliding with milky way?
Klaynos Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 collision about 3billion years Sun age around 5billion years, the main stage of it's life is predicted around 10 billion I belive....
Kermit Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 collision about 3billion years Sun age around 5billion years' date=' the main stage of it's life is predicted around 10 billion I belive....[/quote'] What's interesting though is that there's not really much of a "collision". The two galaxies just merge together, with all the stars gliding past eachother. The distance between stars is so great that it's highly improbable any two stars would bump into eachother. And I also think that there'll be a period of rapid star formation, too.
Bettina Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I think it will be catastrophic. Just upsetting the gravitational attraction alone. Just my opinion.....but what a great question! Bettina
CPL.Luke Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I remember seeing a simulation of the two galaxies colliding, and something like 1/4 of all stars in the milky way will get sucked into the supermassive black holes at the center of the two galaxies
