Pangloss
PBS is re-running the April 2005 episode of Frontline entitled "Israel's Next War" over the next week or so (check your local listings). This fascinating episode is also available entirely online, at this URL: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/view/ (RealPlayer is required.) This is, of course, appropriate right now, because of events in the Gaza Strip this week. The episode takes a look at how the settlers have become distanced from the Israeli political mainstream, and looks at some of the extreme measures that they're willing to go to in order to protect the settlements. Some of these people make the American "religious right" look like characters in a Disney movie. They're organized, some of them are violent, and they're not in the least bit interested in peace or compromise. Check it out, it's well worth a look. ku
Many seem to believe that Islam is the only "extreme" religion, but I think that any religion can evolve into extremism.
5614
Many seem to believe that Islam is the only "extreme" religion, but I think that any religion can evolve into extremism. That is true. I think the problem is that there are no real extremist religious groups other than islamic or muslim ones... sure any religion can evolve in any direction, but with the current situation they havent. I think the fact that there are many, (well, not so many but they make themselves well known) muslim or islamic extremists that people generalise, stereotype and get used to the term islamic extremists, as opposed to clearly distincting between the religion and the extremists. One major difference is that America and Europe had a liberal movement that fought against intolerance. The pendelum has swung back some, probably for the good, because you can't tolerate people bent on destroying you. Islamic extremists are bonded by the religion, not nationality, so I think the description is correct in most cases. Doesn't mean they are following the religion correctly.
