TheVat Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/nichelle-nichols-dead-star-trek-lieutenant-uhura-1235189880/ An interesting obit. I didn't know about her recruiting stint with NASA. Or that MLK was a Trekkie. And talked her into staying on the series when she was planning to leave Knew that she and Shatner broke the interracial kiss barrier on American tv, which required malign telekinetic beings to achieve but hey it was a start. May her hailing frequencies always be open. 1
Moontanman Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 RIP for sure, Nichelle was my first crush as a little boy. She will be missed I am sure!
toucana Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Engineer Mae Jemison became NASA's first African American woman astronaut, and flew an 8 day mission STS-47 onboard space shuttle Endeavour from the 12th to the 20th September 1992. Each day she began her duty shift by quoting Lt. Uhura “Hailing frequencies are open“ as her comms test. https://web.archive.org/web/20150621152840/http://news.stanford.edu/stanfordtoday/ed/9607/9607mj.html
Peterkin Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I always considered her one of the most attractive women on television. I happened to see this charming snippet of an interview just a few days ago https://www.bbc.co.uk/ideas/videos/how-a-kiss-on-star-trek-made-history/p05xhchv 1
