X-Y
Hello all, Need some advice, I have been accepted to do my Degree in Science the only problem I am having is that I haven't study in years!!! The degree starts in January so im beginning to "hit" the books do some reading, some research etc... my only problem is concentration, if I read something 10 minutes later I completely forget what I was reading. I hope this is a temporary thing maybe because I haven’t studied for a few years
mezarashi
I have this problem too especially when the text is rigorously mathematical. As you read, have a pen or pencil reading with some scrap paper to jot down notes of your own as if you were lecturing to yourself. Rewrite important facts and derive ( or rather rewrite ^^;; ) important equations. It may seem redundant but after you write things down in your own words, you tend to remember it better. Quickly finding problems to apply your newly found knowledge is also an added bonus. It's easier to learn something once you understand what the world this information is for, how it can be applied. Just some friendly college studying advice from another college junky ^^
Dave
I find that whenever reading mathematical texts (or pretty much any scientific text) it's always helpful to look out for anything that says 'clearly'. Most of the time, it's obvious. But whenever it isn't, it's always a good idea to go through that step and expand it out by yourself to make sure that you understand every single thing that's going on. When you don't do this, your understanding tends to drop quite a lot. In maths at least, it's one thing to read and understand a text, but quite another to actually use the content to prove things and do useful things with it.
