I just wish the human family was doing something a bit more interesting than PlayStation games

Where do you come up with this crap?

I thought "birth control stunts progress" was the winner, hands-down, in the Stupidest Comment on a Forum contest.  But the PlayStation thing was a strong runner-up!  I see a future writing speeches for Trump, for this young man.

So what's your solution to the Why Aren't We In Space problem?

Do you remember what this thread is about? Shall we close this one so you can pursue this new problem?

Why Aren't We In Space

Well, for one thing, it's hard to breathe in space. For another, there are too many of us.

Anyway, we're far too busy blowing up our own and one another's assets in wars.

I have no idea what even theoretically the argument could be. Other than perhaps if we just make life harder for half of the population everything will be better?

Make the planet uninhabitable faster, so that we have no choice but to get off it or die. Elon Musk will get off... but I don't think he'll get very far.

Exactly. Estimates vary, but one figure says that when the human population gets to 10 billion the Earth can no longer sustain the human family. Governments will be forced to look elsewhere.

So the quicker we get to 10 billion people the better, so we can start living on Mars and become a spacefaring species

Cheerz

Dilly argument. What is the carrying capacity of Mars?

Mars is just the beginning🙂

Based on your logic, countries with regular famines should have expanded beyond our solar system by now.

Exactly so🙂

Lucky no one said that to the Wright brothers🙂

Your Pollyanna disposition does not actually make for a good argument.

Did they take anyone off planet, or just set off a huge contribution to climate change?

So how do you propose to get human beings to the planets?

66y later they did; Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon🙂

Which had nothing to do with the Wright brothers, who did nothing in rocketry. You'll have to credit the Sung Dynasty via Robert Goddard. But even the few people who can get to the moon can't survive there for very long. You can bet your fake cowboy boots the passengers won't be a babies their parents can't feed.

If they go it will be through science and reason, not gumdrops and cotton candy and rainbows.

Majority of the resources necessary for a colony are available.

Likely be transported as gametes. Raising the first few generations would be interesting though. Possibly require robotic assistance depending on the numbers.

Lot will depend on our future capabilities and what we're trying to accomplish. Genetic bottlenecks and population growth may not even be an issue.

That may be the future of space colonization - assuming** - but it does nothing to relieve the crowding and privation here on Earth.   ** - that anyplace within reach can be terraformed; otherwise, why even bother? What's the point in taking 150,000 years to seed a plastic dome?

- that we had the resources to spare for such a huge frivolous gesture

Unless what you mean is a last gasp effort to save some remnant of humanity from extinction. There's been a lot of talk about that. But it's not what the OP is about.

Population density changes and resource distribution are understandable concerns, but the global population growth rate is actually reducing.

We're a pretty frivolous species. I'm expecting a slew of colonies founded by different entities for varying reasons.

Most colonies won't take long to construct once the infrastructure and automation is developed. Terraforming is probably a pipedream, but habitats could still offer plenty for people.

Extraterrestrial environments pose issues for developing embryos that artificial wombs could help us overcome. We're likely to see the technology used in a few different ways though.

Well, good luck with that!
