flyingpoker Posted August 4, 2003 Posted August 4, 2003 Anyone can tell me what chemical is used to remove oxygen from water.. I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me..Thank you in advance ^^;
Kedas Posted August 4, 2003 Posted August 4, 2003 Do you mean 2*H2O --> 2*H2 + O2 OR the solution of water with O2

Sayonara Posted August 4, 2003 Posted August 4, 2003 This looks promising: http://www.genchemcorp.com/markets/water/oxygen_removal.shtml
greg1917 Posted August 4, 2003 Posted August 4, 2003 A possibly simpler way is to simply boil the water you're using (I assume its in a lab so you'll be using distilled water to begin with) then put some sort of oil on the top of the water to keep it oxygen free. You dont need much oil, half a centimetre (in a normal test tube) should do. If its the experiment Im thinking of youll also do some experiments where you put a nail in a test tube with some drying agent, a nail in ordinary water open to the atmosphere and a nail wrapped in zinc or copper to demonstate oxidation/reduction.
flyingpoker Posted August 4, 2003 Author Posted August 4, 2003 I understand that all of you are trying to help.. I just need to know the chemical needed to remove/absorb oxygen from water.. Not any type of experiment or solutions.. Oxygen Scavanger is not the one .. Hope when i come back from school i will get some name of chemicals.. Thx everyone for your help =D
Sayonara Posted August 4, 2003 Posted August 4, 2003 "The One"? Are you looking for an oxygen-removing chemical or a messiah? The chemicals required for the oxygen scavenging process on that webpage are all listed on the same page.
Kedas Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Originally posted by Sayonara³ "The One"? Are you looking for an oxygen-removing chemical or a messiah? LOL Maybe there is a more simple not so effective way. Not really removing the O2 but making it harder for the O2 to stay by adding an other substance. If you make a strong salt (NaCl) water solution the amount of oxygen that can be absorbed should be less. not sure though nor do I know the best temp to do this. (just a thought) Boiling is probably more effective though. (maybe a combination)
Sayonara Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I would just boil it too but I don't think his teacher will accept that answer if she/he asked for a chemical :-s

Let me give you guys a clue which my teacher gave me..Stupid though.. the chemical has letters "L" "P" "O"
Kedas Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 anyone who wants to try brute force to narrow down the options to find the messiah. here is a list with 5608 chemicals. BTW about 'messiah': take a dictionary. chemical-list.zip
Sayonara Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Messiah chemicals are those which have an affinity for all other ionic elements due to their unique 7-2 electron configuration.
NSX Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I don't know about an actual chemical to seperate oxygen from water, but when we wanted to seperate the 2 (ie. H & O) we used electrolysis.
Sayonara Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 If I understand correctly he wants to remove the dissolved oxygen to create a control solution for a rusting experiment.
Dudde Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 a chemical to remove the oxygen from hydrogen?O_o something that would bond with the hydrogen atoms to get them away from oxygen? probably not.... maybe it's something that bonds with oxygen and prevents the returning of it;)..or something...what?O_o
Dudde Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 ooo hahaha *shakes head* *ahem* ..shut up... (one really needs more than an hour of sleep at nights during the school week methinks* that shouldn't be too hard to figure out:-p
Sayonara Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I already pointed him in the right direction, but apparently he kind of knows this teacher expects a specific answer, which is plainly stupid anyway but that's the education system for you. TO THE GOOGLEMOBILE!
Dudde Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 if the teacher is expecting a specific answer...please point them in here so they might be educated:-p it's stupid to ask that unless you're going to give a few more clues than "it has these letters in it" *dons fancy squirrel costume*
Sayonara Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I'm just disappointed nobody spotted the deliberate mistake yet... ...unless they did and are cunningly lying in wait for the person who trips over it.

Yes..You are right..lol..i had time explaining this..Guys have me solve it due to the above problem..Thanks
Dudde Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 what's the deliberate mistake going on eh sayonara?O_o you're not planting evidence..er...information...are you? O.o
Dudde Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 of course he's not the messiah, that's my job naughty, naughty boy O_o
