Still don’t follow. Perhaps you’re asking why they are slower to announce their projections?

Well they do have Harris on 188 and Trump on 266 ATM. Fox and Sky have already called it for Trump (226 to 280) while PBS and the Australian ABC has it 214 to 248.

US politics has a lot of weight....'here' people are happy for Trump...for us here,we are used to political tricks of making your political opponents convicts and accusing them of felonies..it's bad politics that I wished it could not spread to the US.

It's funnier than that, America has voted in their king and we'll be forced to pay him fealty; the circle of life lends wieght to the irony... 😉😣

What is the point of democracy when so many people believe stupidity and will actively vote against their own interests repeatedly? This country didn't deserve Kamala Harris as president if it can continually choose that orange fuck. Electoral college or not how TF did this happen?

I can't believe there ARE so many retarded Americans.  😛

Woke up, read the news.  Oh boy.  Feel like the Spanish asthma patient in The Plague, by Camus.  He stays in bed all day transferring dried peas from one bucket to another.  Refuses to get out of bed.

Anyway, fuck Pennsylvania.  No POTUS has won the US election in 80 years without winning PA.  I had a bad feeling about PA for days, but kept pushing it aside.  We really need to take the Electoral College and bury it deep out in the cornfield.

Sorry, Europe, UK, Canada, Oz, et al.  We really tried.

I suppose the result is what constant gerrymandering does in the end. One thing's clear, Trumpites don't actually listen to what Trump says. The man, seriously, cannot string two coherent sentences together. It cripples my brain to listen to him. He talks absolute garbage. I'd rather talk to a dementia patient, at least they are what they are. Words fail me.

It's Ukraine and Palestine I feel really bad for. I mean Palestine were going to get fucked either way but Ukraine might as well be called Russia now as Trump is going to throw them under the Russians tank, bus, jeep, the whole convoy.

Based on how it looks there isn't even any shot of a legal challenge or a recount that could sway the result in a meaningful way.

It is not about what he says. Or even does. It is about how folks feel and they feel validated in all their dark (non-PC) worldviews. Much of it is about invalidating reality.

Yeah. He gives morons a voice. I make no apologies for my description. I can feel in my bones major civil strife or war on the horizon. All the ingredients for major global instability seem to be coalescing.

It is not even Trump who worries me most. It is the folks who realize how to abuse the government machinery (e.g. Project 2025).

I doubt the civil war angle. Folks are too complacent and frankly, lazy (or busy). Strife, yes. And radicalism.

It looks like Project 2025 can start to be implemented.

From the NY Times this morning...

Quote

Donald Trump told Americans exactly what he planned to do.

He would use military force against his political opponents. He would fire thousands of career public servants. He would deport millions of immigrants in military-style roundups. He would crush the independence of the Department of Justice, use government to push public health conspiracies and abandon America’s allies abroad. He would turn the government into a tool of his own grievances, a way to punish his critics and richly reward his supporters. He would be a “dictator” — if only on Day 1.

And, when asked to give him the power to do all of that, the voters said yes.

This was a conquering of the nation not by force but with a permission slip. Now, America stands on the precipice of an authoritarian style of governance never before seen in its 248-year history.

It shows to me that appealing to folk's base instincts continues to work. Facts don't matter, policy doesn't, accountabilty sure doesn't. Be xenophobic and you are halfway there. Make them fear the others to cover the difference. True then, true now. It seems we only made superficial progress.

Yep.  Looks like we're getting a GOP majority in Senate, too.

And they already had a voice on vast tracts of the Internet.  Bumper sticker cognition is winning.

I was definitely including Ukraine in my "sorry, Europe."  I don't quite see how UK and EU can make up the shortfall in funding if US backs out of its commitments.

Europe needs to step up, which they likely won't.  Especialy with pro-Russian right wingers waiting.  Also above I forgot to rant about sexism. We are a bunch of dum dums.

I tend to check 538 and find the Democrats holding or very slightly declining, despite hearing more descriptions of Democrats building early leads...probably the way I'm sampling or what I'm clicking but if in fact it's due to GOP putting their finger on the polls should 538 not be adjusting for that?

I predicted Harris would win, almost comfortably, if she ran in a certain way and not only has she done that...but Trump seems to be getting in his own way. I would expect Harris would have a lead nationally of about 4% (and probably need at least 2) but 538 has her lead dwindled to 1.1 after building to over 3 a couple months back.

That was what we discussed a few times. I feel that appealing to moderates has not been a great strategy. And she might even lose the popular vote. The way folks perceive and feel about things has changed and what we perceive as the norm is gone.

First impressions on the 2024 election result  - (As a Brit living over the pond):

i. Many Americans pay little attention, and give even less critical thought to the finer details of daily politics and  current affairs. They tend to receive and form opinions based on what they hear on hyper-partisan cable media, and are likely to believe whatever they are told about prices, employment and migration. If some shock-jock assures them that jars of Goober cost twice what they did four years ago because Puerto Rican migrants are eating their pets, they are inclined to take that as gospel, and go off and vote for whoever they think is likely to solve the problem ( N.B. Brits are no better - It’s how we wound up with Brexit and a leader like Bojo).

ii. Ambrose Bierce once said “War is God’s way of teaching Americans Geography”. You might add that nowadays a US presidential election seems to be God’s way of teaching Americans History, and unfortunately many Americans who have no real first-hand experience of what mainstream fascism really entails seem to be determined to find out the hard way.

iii. When Speaker Tip O’Neill said “All politics is local”, he was actually quoting a piece of proverbial wisdom dating back to 1932. But it’s frighteningly true if you ever travel as a Brit to America and live in California or Colorado for a month or two. The USA is huge ! It’s a continent, not a country. Down in Chula Vista on the California-Mexico border, Washington DC and its media political bubble seem as remote as the Vatican in Rome must have seemed to a Roman Catholic monk living in Finland in the Middle Ages. Many Americans are simply not interested in that political world, and their concerns are purely local ones.

iv. I do fear that the Kamala Harris campaign was hobbled from the outset by its emollient and inclusive sentiments and instincts. Unfortunately America presidential elections are not often exercises in statesmanship and decorous civility. They have frequently tended to be bloody handed knock-down bar-room brawls, well into living memory - for those who can recall the virulent anti-Catholic rhetoric levelled at JFK in 1960, or the teargas mayhem outside the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1968.

America has now demonstrated  for the second time that it is simply not ready or capable of accepting a female leader - and  for the foreseeable future, it probably never will be.

This is the sentiment I have been seeing. There will be some research on this, and my gut feeling is that it will be borne true. Doubly so for a woman of colour. My suspicion is that the data will show lower support among white women for Harris than for either Biden or Clinton. And this under the looming threat of Dobbs. Ultimately, it shows again the power of identity politics over everything else.
